    pay for admin rights

I set up a website 18months ago and left the running to a web design company I now wish to take over control but they want paying for administrator rights, what does this mean, and why?

I think you'll need to be a bit more specific on what type of service you've got.

Not much to go on with a 1 liner, welcome to hexus though

    Re: pay for admin rights

Does the design company also run the hostiong site? It may be that t hey will need to change the access to the server and you are paying for that work.

Alternatively (<cynic mode> it could be that by taking contriol of your site they see a revenue stream disappearing, and they want to make it unattractive for you to change, or get a last bite of cash from you </cynic mode>

Do you have the source code for your web site? If so you could just take it and host elsewhere. If not, they may make a charge for releasing it to you.

It might be best to discuss exactly what you are going to get for the charge, and if appropriate, challenge it. However a read of the original T&C when yoou signed up with them may reveal the answers.

    Re: pay for admin rights

Another posability is that they have the admin details of the domain and are requesting payment for the continues administration and registration of the domain name.

As TiG said though, more information would be good

Yup its no doubt hidden in the small print somewhere, likely its for the registration etc of the domain, did you pay a flat fee for the design running or was it over a set period of time. Bets bet is to contact them and ask for a breakdown of what these fees would be.
