Best QoS Router for online gaming in shared house?

I'm looking to buy a wireless router/access point so that I can play online games with a decent ping whilst my housemates download and stream to their hearts content. Currently the only time I get to play online is early in the evening when the house is free or late at night when everyone else is in bed.

I'm currently looking at the d-link dgl 4300/4500 and the dir-655/855 series of routers. Does anyone have any experience with these? Can anyone recommend anything else? I'm looking to spent a maximum of £130.

    Cheers!

    LinITX.com - LinITX ALIX 2C0 LX700 (2NIC) m0n0wall Firewall Kit

£143.75 including VAT and delivery. You would need either a minipci wifi card for it, or any old spare access point which might also act as the ethernet switch. It's only a router - it doesn't do ADSL.

    adsl router<->m0n0wall<->switch and acccess point.

Re: Best QoS Router for online gaming in shared house?

Your ping is always going to be naff if your housemates are downloading/streaming all day long, and no new router access point is going to change that, regardless of how much you have to spend. If the line is busy with other traffic your ping is going to go up, even load balancing routers won't make a noticeable difference if your using a standard 'up to 10meg' connection and have multiple people utilizing it.

I'm no expert so please correct me if i'm wrong, just trying to save you a few squid. I personally found that when my house mates at Uni were taking the p*ss with the bandwidth the best thing to do was to unplug them for a while. Nice cheap solution.

Re: Best QoS Router for online gaming in shared house?

I use a m0n0wall transparent shaping firewall bridge - I'm on Be 24Mb and I slightly limit my max speed so that other PCs get priority. I can have 20 things downloading, and run uTorrent at "unlimited" upload at the same time, and my f8lure ping graphs are still flawless and other residents get the usual low latency and decent transfer speeds.

m0n0wall is nice. pfSense is also another option which has a packages system for things like Snort and a few other options. Note that the latest beta m0n0wall can't do shaping and firewalling at the same time - use the latest stable version.

WRT54GL with DD-WRT for cheap and cheerful yet does the job.

m0n0wall is a specially written variant of unix , designed to run as a high performance firewall.

am being very sad musically - listenign to the best of the housemartins and beautfull south

you effectivly get an enterprise level firewall - so it'll goo all the good stuff that the more expensive bits of cisco kit might do.

Re: Best QoS Router for online gaming in shared house?

Draytek Vigor 2600/2800 series routers have both management for internal LAN traffic and bandwidth management from what's available via WAN.

I've not actually experimented with how this translates into anything practical, but would certainly be worth looking at - Product Title

It's also fantastic for things like routing options, voip, printers on virtual tcp/ip ports via usb and even had it's own section for managing p2p stuff.

Seems to be available for about £130 depending on where you find one

Re: Best QoS Router for online gaming in shared house?

FYI: Draytek kit has a bad rep with regards to ISPs like Be/O2 which use ADSL2+ Annex M. I would use my 2800VG if it worked well, but it doesn't.

Re: Best QoS Router for online gaming in shared house?

Interesting, not seen those kind of issues and we use those routers for ~400 field staff.

Then again, it's all either bt or vodafone as an ISP, so that might explain it!

Thanks for the info, worth knowing
