There will be 2 computers and possibly 1 mobile device. Plus I'm really not sure about the wiring, the upstairs ring is, AFAIK, seperate from the downstairs ring so it wouldn't work, would it?
They are odd things, sometimes they do. However, with that requirement wireless it probably the best option.
Not around too often!
Belkin - I don't like the setups I've used and the reliability is a major concern. I'd never buy one for myself.
Netgear - Massively popular and supplied by Sky as standard. Specific models have suffered a firmware glitch that may kill the config without resurrection. As a result the feeling is generally negative at the moment although I'd certainly consider one.
Draytek - As previously mentioned expensive but fully featured. Not reknowned for their wireless however.
Linksys - I've used their kit for years and found it very good value. I've had one unit fail on me but in general plenty of vfm. Wireless range has been called into question for their more expensive products (draft-n).
Buffalo - Original wireless specialist. My current kit is theirs and works very well indeed. Recommended.
Gaming
My network is in two halves. I have my Buffalo router (and Cable modem) in lounge to run the xbox etc. I then have a wireless bridge (also Buffalo) in my study and 3/4 PC's on wired network there.
We can happily play WOW on 4 PC's simultainously in the study across the 802.11g connection to the lounge. While I've no idea how more intensive games will run it does imply you should be fine.

Had a D-Link for a while. Wouldnt recommend it. Kept needing to be reset and stopped working after 6 months.
Current Netgear wireless router has given me no problems. Easy to set up, and a nice control panel. From the reviews I read at the time it was one of the best for transmitting through walls which is why I went for it.
my mate was looking yesterday and generally Netgear (bar a few which needed a firmware upgrade and then worked fine) and Belkin (which were good but seemed more difficult to set up - how hard can it be tbh?) seemed to both be well received review-wise.
