    Repeaters/Boosters INEXQ

    I've had my INEXQ ISW054t router for about a year or so now, the signal has been absolutely dire, currently i'm on 9.0 Mbps with a weak signal strength. The router is at the bottom of the house and my computer is at the top, which is 4 floors. I am directly above the router, obviously the height will affect the strength and the router is a pretty bad one. However i can't find any repeaters or secondary access points that are compatible with my router (802.11b).

    What can i do to improve signal strength and speed?

    Having a cable is unfeasible due to the size of the house.

    There isn't usually a compatibility issue with boosters and routers - if you can find the correct fitting type (SMA / Reverse SMA ect) then it should work without an issue.

    However, and sorry to be blunt - but it doesn't matter what you bolt onto that router, its still going to suck. I've just done a Google of it, and its nothing more than a cheap non-name router with dire wireless attached to it.
    Cut your loses and drop it.

    Don't waste your money on buying boosters for it, just buy a new router. Something like the WRT54 would do the job fine, and a 30 second change of its firmware will allow you to control the power output of wireless too!

    Thanks, atleast i'll save cash in the long run.

    Would the WRT54 be capable of strong signal through 4 floors?

    Its simply not possiable to give a blanket answer to a question like that sadly . There are simply too many factors that can alter a signal.

    Distance, thickness of the walls, wall material and signal power output are just a few.
    4 Floors is actually quite a few by any means, so I wouldn't even like to comment on how it would do. If your current one can do it, but weakly, it stands a good chance the WRT54 can do it better.

    There are other routers besides the WRT54, so don't get set on that without having a look around, but I recommend it due to being Linux based. This means installing an alternative firmware is very easy. The advantages of this? - being able to alter many more settings, including the as previously mentioned, power output.

    You may also want to look into some directional / high gain wireless aerials. These work by altering how / where the signal goes. In short : It steals it from some parts, and adds it to others.
    Ebay has loads for cheap prices : wireless aerial, wireless antenna, wifi aerial, Networking items at low prices on eBay.co.uk

    Alright, thanks alot

    edit;

    Is it possible to get a UHF Aerial and get an adapter for my pci > aerial?
    would that increase signal strength?
