    router causing slow broadband speeds.

    Hi,

I just upgraded to a 10mb Virgin connection but am getting 1.6mb in online speedtests, however when i plug the ethernet cable straight into the modem rather than the linksys wrt54gs router it gets me the proper full speed, alas my deductive powers have deduced the router is the problem.

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing it? There are only 2 other pc's connected to the router (both via wireless) and they are getting the same problem.

Could it be port forwarding (like it says i need to do in utorrent) and if it is could someone give me some simple advice as to what it is and how to do it.

i've also read the wrt54gs router is crap (the v5 version anyway) could it be just unable to cope with 10mb?

    thanks in advance.

Have you tried re-setting the router - most have a little red reset button. Mine is an old 802.11b router and it's need resetting regularly but I get a full 10Mb through it - also courtesy of Virgin Media.

Wireless is pretty much always going to be slower than a wired connection.

As said try resetting the router to see if this improves things.

Just a quick question have all the pc's got 'G' Compatable wireless cards? Because if they have only got older 'B' ones then that will be limiting you to 10MB on the internal lan, which will inevitably lead to slower internet speeds for those devices.

Make sure you the latest firmware. My WRT54G was fine with 20mb so you should have no problems.

I tried resetting the router to no avail and I'm using a ethernet cable and not wireless but still get 1.6mb in speed tests.

I think it's probably to do with port mapping but i really don't have a notion what it is or how to do it properly.

Re: router causing slow broadband speeds.

    hey everyone,

i downloaded tomato firmware and now have everything running at 9mb on the speed tests, only problem is I can't find where to set a password or security for the wi fi connections (don't want the neighbours stealing my bandwidth). Anyone know where those settings are on tomato?
