Need a free network traffic monitoring app.

    Hi all,

Can anyone recommend to me a Windows XP application that I can use to monitor network traffic on a chosen interface?

I'm looking for something very simple - doesn't need to decompose packets or do any detailed traffic analysis, its more for monitoring bandwidth utilization and total download/upload over time.
Destination/source information would be a bonus.

    Thanks,
    Mut.

Ah good suggestion - it has actually become WireShark and is still free, and cross platform.

I say good suggestion because I already have it installed, but completely forgot about it!

However, it can be a bit forbidding to use..!

    Netlimiter 2 Monitor (freeware).
    http://www.netlimiter.com/download.php

    Doesn't do source/destination though.

I'm not sure how it compares to the rest but there is also NetMeter which I think is pretty good.
    Although I don't think it does source/destination.

Re: Need a free network traffic monitoring app.

I changed from BWMeter to Netmeter, as BWMeter took up too much CPU when going full throttle (3MB/sec combined). BWMeter does have funky source-destination filters though.

For actually monitoring network communication, Process Monitor from sysinternals/MS can monitor network traffic in a simple "this program sent to & received from this host" kind of way, if that might be useful to you. You can set it to drop certain filtered things from the log so that you end up with only what you haven't filtered out. It's not a "taskbar notification area" (tray) app, though.
