Re: Gigabit Ethernet running at Megabit speed :-(

The router isn't effecting the internal LAN speed. But rather when jumbo frames are enabled I cannot access my NAS web access page externally - it just times out. I can only assume it is because my router doesn't support JF as when I disable JF I can view the NAS webpage externally.

Just seems strange as the torrents still work downloading to the nas (it has a torrent agent on it) so the JF can't be interfering too much with nas operations on the net.

I don't know if it will help but have you tried updating your router's firmware?

Possibly turning on jumbo frames has increased the CPU load on the NAS, meaning the web interface doesn't respond. Does it have a telnet interface where you could check cpu load?

EDIT - seems it does indeed have a telnet interface, which runs on port 13131. Maybe worth having a look at that and seeing what info you can glean from there. I seem to recall one of the QNAP home NAS boxes having an issue a while ago whereby if you changed one of the servers to run on a custom port if caused 100% cpu usage, so this could be a similar thing I guess.

EDIT 2 - actually, having read through again.... Can you clarify if the web interface works from your LAN? If it works on your PC could you hook your PC up to the router?

Just a thought. Make sure nothing is streaming from the NAS. I exerienced some random slow downs. Untill I found out that someone else in the house was streaming music over the WHS. As a result my speed was "stuck" at 11 MB/s.

Thanks for the replies, nothing is streaming from the NAS as it is just myself using it.

The web interface definately works from the LAN on the internal IP when jumbo is on but not the external address. I can only assume it is my router as it is a few years old now.

I have just updated my NIC drivers as last ditch attemp which I thought would work but still nothing! Arrgghh. Strangely though, the driver name is "Nvidia 10/100/1000 Ethernet....etc" but yet in the Device settings there is still no 1000Mb speed setting instead of Auto-negotiate. Strange that there isn't but yet the drive name includes Gb/s :-S

Well i have 2 other people in my house streaming music from my WHS yet i can still copy large files from my Computer to the server at 50MB's per second. This is on a 1GB network. I also had the same problem as the OP but i fixed it by buying new CAT 5 leads!

Just make sure you have good quality leads thats all im saying. They dont HAVE to be CAT 5. Thats just what i bought cause the ones i was using were old.

Re: Gigabit Ethernet running at Megabit speed :-(

For Gigabit, they have to be cat 5e or above, but it's hard to find lower than 5e now anyway. You should try connecting using a short patch lead. It would also be worth checking the cable isn't running past anything like fluorescent light fixtures.

Re: Gigabit Ethernet running at Megabit speed :-(

at the risk of tempting fate, I had the same problem but think I've sorted it.

I read this thread, looked at the patch cable going to my main pc, and saw it was only cat 5. Replaced with a patch cable I'd made myself out of 5e, and straightaway connected at 1gbs.

(with the old cable, it would connect at 1gbs when I first powered up the gig switch, but then at some point it would drop down to 100mbs and only doing a power cycle on the switch would get it back. unplugging and putting the cable back in would make no difference before, so fingers crossed...)

Edit: thought I'd update just to mention it's 2 weeks later, and so far so good, so almost certain it was a dodgy cable for me.

That sounds like the transfer is being bottlenecked by something *other than* the network; specifically (since it's likely to be the slowest factor) the NAS's disk write speed!? You say the NAS has a torrent client - is this turned on and operating? If so it might be hogging NAS resources and slowing the transfer down. What specific HDs do you have in the NAS? They *shouldn't* be the bottleneck, but you never know! I think the network is a bit of a red herring here, especially if you can get 26 - 28 MB/s in one direction - this is higher than a 100Mbps network should support!
