I know from my dad having the t-mobile broadband that he plugs his phone into his laptop, and can then use the net. You could try connecting the iphone to your laptop via the usb cable. On my dad's phone in order to use the net the phone must be switch to the 'use phone as modem'. But i'm not 100% about the iphone.
If you want to use tethering with your iPhone then you're supposed to give O2 £14.68 for 3Gb or £29.36 for 10Gb (source).
The alternative way is to go to http://help.benm.at/help.php on your iPhone. Follow the link for 'mobileconfigs' under 'Tethering & Internet Settings' then choose UK and O2 vertigo. I've done it and it works fine.
I've seen conflicting reports, some saying that O2 can and some saying that O2 can't detect you using tethering so use it at your own risk.
I do this on orange, I've phoned them up and checked and its counting as normal internet usage on my phone! rather than seeing it as tethering... bw doesnt half go quick on 3.5g
It is, providing you pay £15/m to O2 to enable tethering... or you could use http://help.benm.at from your iPhone to illicitly enable it
O2's unlimited data is rather limited I feel. I don't have an iPhone, (I have an HTC Touch HD, if you care). But I do have an O2 contract with "unlimited" data. when reading their T&C I found that they don't allow VOIP (of any sort, including skype) or streaming, or connecting your phone to any other device, or putting your sim directly in a laptop, or... basically anything that might use up bandwidth or that they could charge you seperatly for (like mobile broadband or phone calls). My wife though, who is on T-Mobile can do pretty much what she likes with her unlimited data. It specifally says in her T&C that she can use her phone as a modem for another device. The only limitation is a guideline fair use policy of 1Gb a month.
My next contract will be T-Mobile, unless someone from O2 reads this and sorts out their T&C.
