High Pings on Marvell Yukon and Win7

I am experiencing some high pings when i run a speedtest at speedtest.net, but only when i use Win7 64. If i reboot and try the same server in Vista64 i see a normal <100ms ping, in win 7 i see 500+ms.

I initially thought this was a driver issue, but after installing a new driver from Marvell specifically for Win7 i see no difference.

I have had a google around and cant seem to find anyone else with this issue. Could any of the clever chaps on here advise what it could be?

That is a werid issue. I personally have had no issues with networking on Windows 7.

Let's try the obvious ones that seem to cause problems:

1) Disable IPv6. IPv6 in Windows is not mature yet, and when enabled (but not in use) it can cause problems.

2) Manually define your IP, subnet, DNS, etc. It could be that your DNS server you are using has some quirk that means it doesn't associate well with Windows 7, or that your IP lease might not be sticking.

That's all I can think of at the top of my head, but until I know more about the specific network setup you have, I cannot care to speculate further.

Some more info about my setup; I use a netgear router with its NAT firewall turned on and use a static IP on my PC, so i have already manually defined my IP address, Subnet and DNS etc. I also use Comodo and turn off the Windows firewall.

When i installed Win 7 i altered the reservable bandwidth setting, as was recommended for Vista, maybe this broke it!? Is there a way to reset the OS to default install settings at all?

I am going to try and get to the bottom of this today, just uninstalled comodo, and i will disable IPv6 and try it again.

Silly question, did you remember to propergate your manual IP settings between installs?

I have got the pings back to normal values by un-installing Comodo and disabling IPv6, so now i need to figure out a way of getting the low pings with Comodo running.

You said that you are using a Static IP, did you set the Static IP up on Windows 7?

Further more, I doubt very much you will need a 3rd party firewall on Windows 7. Just enable the one that comes with the OS, it's fairly comprehensive.

Yes, i set up the static IP in Windows. (sorry, my networking knowledge is a little lacking!)

The main reason i want to use a third party firewall is to stop any outbound vulnerabilities. Am i correct in assuming that the Win7 firewall wont handle this as well as say Comodo? If the Windows firewall will block outbounds connection attempts too, then i'm happy to go without Comodo for the time being.

Also, don't use the built in windows 7 drivers go to the marvell yukon site and grab the latest drivers for Windows 7 Mine was a bit naff till I got the latest drivers.

If by blocking outbound connections you mean that annoying pop-up that comes up everytime you want to use an application that connects to the internet (I just installed Windows and am in the middle of installing my software, so I get them more than usual), then yes, it does. As I said, fairly comprehensive.

I got the Win7 drivers yesterday, had been trying to find some for a while until then, Not sure why i didn't think of looking on the Marvell website sooner?!

I'll go without Comodo for the time being then, and do some further research to see if there is a known incompatibility between it and Win 7.
