    TalkTalk vs Virgin

    Hi everyone,

I'm moving to "the countryside" soon, so my choice of broadband is limited! It's basically between Talk Talk and Virgin. They're both roughly the same price. So... which is best?! Any particularly good or bad experiences with either? There's no cabling, so everything's through the phone line.

    Any opinions greatly appreciated!

oh dear..... thats a though one. I would say that my dealings with blueyonder ADSL was better than my dealings with AOL / TalkTalk but both where still pretty bad.

Both are bad, but I'd go with Virgin.

Mainly because TalkTalk are even more clueless than VM and have very bad speeds.

    Re: TalkTalk vs Virgin

dads on talk talk, a few years back while on BT the trees grew through the lines and wore out the cables, BT fixed this in days!

then we went Talk Talk and 4 years later the trees grew back and did the lines. it took 4 months of complaining, even telling the idiots at the call centre we would get cut off during the call if the wind blew !, they even rang back after we would get cut off.

in the end we stopped the direct debit, when they rang to ask why and we explained to retentions we got a BT engineer out bank holiday sunday to replace the line..

2 months free as a sorry..

4 months against a few days.. figure it out yourself.

    Re: TalkTalk vs Virgin

No experience with TalkTalk, but I put my Granddad on Virgin ADSL well over 18months ago now (back when I was a happy Virgin Cable customer) and in all honesty it has been flawless as far as I'm aware. He has once mentioned to me about a slowdown on an evening. They also upgraded him from 2Mb to 8Mb for free (didnt tell him mind, but gift horses, their mouths and all that).

Surely tho, if your looking at ADSL, why are you limited to TalkTalk and Virgin? Every ADSL provider uses the same BT infrastructure and in a perfect world, the speeds from one supplier to the next should be equal. There are much better options for standard ADSL than Virgin and TalkTalk...

Have you tried www.samknows.com yet? You might be surprised. I'm in "the countryside" too and we've recently joined the 21st century with O2, Be*, Sky, etc, all treating us!

They weren't too bad when I was with with them to be honest (a good 3 years or so). I could just get a better deal elsewhere so I left.

Cable from Virgin is good, ADSL from Virgin Media is just terrible.

Do not ever think about going for Virgin ADSL, you will regret it - I am sure. You will be constantly capped (between 12-24), you will spend tens of £ a month to get somebody from service who will not be able to sort anything out and will ask you to call again...and again..and again. They will always blame you for their inabilities to deliver the services.I had been fighting with them almost 6 months and finally I had to ask ISPA for help.I had transfers such 15Kb!!! - absolutely useless. This is not only my opinion and that's why they are second the worst provider in the UK according to DSLzoneUK poll , have a look ...and do not make the mistake I did.

As has been proved endless times on here and other forums, you can't blanket sweep Virgin like that.

It hugely matters on which area you are in I'm afraid.

Yes, obviously I generalised. All I wanted to say that Virgin cable is very likely to be good, unlike their ADSL. Thanks for the remark

    You can say that again!

As far as TalkTalk goes, a neighbour over the road has it and he has had no complaints, he said it has never dropped a connection and the speeds have been spot on.

Again, it's all down to trial and error, try get a company that has a cool-down period so if you experience trouble within the first 30-60 days, you can cancel.

    Re: TalkTalk vs Virgin

Precisely, I meant This -Traffic Management at Virgin

Can you imagine how easy is to get into 'abusive users' bracket at Virgin ? I did not use P2P, only ocassionally rapidshare and my line was capped because ....I updated my system during peak hours, after re-installation.And peak at Virgin is between 4pm-0.00 during week, and betwee 10AM!!!! to Midnight during weekend - - yes ,it's from 10 in the morning onward.

Do you know how difficult is to prove them that your line is not working properly and to do the measuring they would ask you, if you do something more than staying at home on state benefits?Try - 6 completed checks of your line within 24 hours (no more than that and be sure that often is going to be unsuccesful because your line is so slow, that the server will not respond) , with at least 3 hours time between every check. That's entire day, believe me.Later you have to call their costly Tech support and dependingly n your luch it will be better for a while ...or not.Obviously if you are 'capped' the cap last at least one full week.

Sorry, IMO Virgin is a very 'special' ISP and they cost me a lot ,in terms of money and stress.

I will stick to my opinion and experience - ADSL Virgin...just do not

I have personally had bad experience with traffic shaping on Virgin ADSL. TalkTalk I cannot care to comment, for I have no experience with them.
