    NTL/Virgin

Why is it when you get a fault with your internet you get some idiot on the end of the phone (Dialed 150 so free, lucky for them.) thats telling you to goto speedtest and run a test and then trying to connect to gamefiles etc etc, switch the cable modem off, do this, do that.
Not being funny duck but I've tried all of that and then when you try to blame the fact that I've probably got programs in the background slowing it down your really clutching at straws...

Well turns out its because I'm running windows 7 and you dont support that...

Well hang on then we'll use the XP laptop I have downstairs...

Glad its my missus downstairs on the phone to them tbh...

    Re: NTL/Virgin

Weeell, I had my time on the phone with the nice woman from NTL and explained why I didnt really need to download there wonderful program that messes with TCP values and crap like that and that it was an intermittent fault.

I am now on hold not talking to there Level 2 supervisor while he runs more tests on my cable modem which for the moment is working fine.

Speedtest.net said my connection was 0.89mb download, apparently thats acceptable if I'm running speedtestduring peak hours...

He's ran his tests and now I have to run the cable modem directly into a WindowsXp machine for 24/48 hours to proove its either there cable modem/system or my router...

That's ridiculous. Broadband suppliers need to start publicising a minimum speed as well as the max. I realise that will be difficult for ADSL until they know exactly where you live, but I don't see why they shouldn't let you type your postcode in. They should also run a probationary period, if during the first 4 weeks of the contract I think they aren't any good, I can pay for the service so far and leave.

    Re: NTL/Virgin

It is actually NTL , the company never changed hands as NTL did own part of Virgin and eventually decided that they would use virgin because it had a better reputation(i dont think so but meh).

I agree, same poor service from them in plymouth now aswell. Have they told you that your throttled and its because youve been downloading after 12am? They say that crap to me as they somehow have changed their traffic management scheme(says nothing on website etc). I got poor speeds but if i dont download during the day (including night) i generally get 8-10mb now, if i download 1+gb during night or day i generally get throttled!.

    Re: NTL/Virgin

I've not hit it hard for a good 2/3 weeks, so I really cant see it me being throttled as it'll fluctuate during the day and appears to have no pattern.

    Re: NTL/Virgin

I don't miss talking to them Morons. Was like trying to talk to a brick wall.

I recently had problems with my phone line (see my thread about thieves stealing my phone line) and within 2 or 3 minutes I was talking to a BT engineer who then rang me back within 1 minute and confirmed a line fault and told me how long it would take to fix it. This is something that would never have happened with Virgin.

With Virgin even when the network was down it was impossible to get it across to them.

    Re: NTL/Virgin

once my connection was down(the whole street was due to some fault), i rang up and they said they cant find out if there is a problem and to go onto their website and look at the status page, like wtf? Seriously how can i check the website if my internet is down.... they are pretty poor and angry bunch to me!.

    Re: NTL/Virgin

I know people round here getting less up/down on their 20mb lines than i do on my 10mb, its really shocking but as said already, us unlucky ones that live to far from BT Exchanges really don't have any options but to lump it.

    Re: NTL/Virgin

It's strange that the quality of service can vary so much around the country. I know other people have problems with VM but here in Peterborough I get amazingly good speeds. My 20Mb line is always running at full speed (as proved by download speeds in excess of 2000kb/s.)
We did have a period just after they upgraded us from 10Mb when the service was a bit patchy but since then it's been perfect.
I really wouldn't want to go back to ADSL ever.
