Recommend me a Netgear ADSL Wireless Router

After 4 years of faithful service my Netgear DG834GT router appears to have died this morning. I'm currently using my ISP supplied Thomson Speedtouch (I'm with O2 broadband).

Problem is the port forwarding just doesn't seem to ever work on their modems, didn't with my old Be Box either before that. Used the same interface so assume the software behind it was just the same...

Anyway, I like Netgear routers as they've always worked as configured and been easy to setup from my experience.

    The options appear to be:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/147199 - Netgear DGN2000 - No cheap 2nd hand prices
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/145579 - Netgear - DG834PN - (£43 delivered 2nd hand from Amazon market place)

I believe the DG834PN is an older model, but does that matter. Why have they introduced the DGN2000, is it meant to be a 'budget' draft-N router?

All that matters to me is ease of set-up and stability. I will be connecting 3 wireless devices (2 desktop and a laptop), and one desktop via homeplug.

It must be compatible with my o2 brandband, but since Netgear routers (including the DGN2000) seem to use the same set-up interface I don't think compatibility would be a problem with these models.

Thoughts and suggestions for other brands welcome. What is the reputation of Linksys, Belkin, D-link and others?

My suggestion? The same as what I use: Netgear DG834GT

It's probably the capacitors inside the GT or the PSU which is at fault. 4 years is definitely about the right timeframe for the caps to start bulging - they use crappy Teapos.

If you already have a soldering iron & sucker, Farnell has free delivery and they stock nice Rubycon caps.

I've used both the DG834PN and DGN2000 on O2 LLU and they work fine. Nothing to choose between them performance wise either tbh.

The 2000 is a bit smaller and you don't get the little feet to stand it on it's end.

If you can get the 834PN cheap then I'd go for that if I were you

Re: Recommend me a Netgear ADSL Wireless Router

May I heartily suggest that 4 years isnt THAT good a time for something like a router?

I have had 3 go tits' up on me and relatives and wont' buy them again.

With good money to spend I'd sugest Draytek, with less money to spned I'd suggest Linksys and with low money to spend I'd suggest Dynamode

Re: Recommend me a Netgear ADSL Wireless Router

But I'm very wary of whether the firmware actual *works*, and from experience I know Netgear's does.

What is the firmware / settings interface like with Linksys routers?

Re: Recommend me a Netgear ADSL Wireless Router

Update: Spotted a bargain on Ebay. 2nd hand Netgear DG834PN for £24 delivered. Unit came with everything and looked in immaculate condition. The seller had 100% feedback from 129 items sold over 4 years, so should be trustworthy Will let you know what my thoughts are about it when I have it.
