    Smallest machine for Smoothwall

Currently using an old SFF Compaq desktop to run my Smoothwall, but would like to use something more power effecient around the same size or smaller.

Needs 4 network ports - I have two PCI dual port NICs to hand, so even if there is an onboard LAN, it will still need to support 2 PCI cards.

    Any suggestions?

    There's mini-itx boards with 3 or 4+ NICs built-in, look around linitx.com.

Really useful site that - a mini-itx board with dual LAN onboard means I can use one of the dual port NIC cards in the PCI slot and we're sorted

I use one of these in a web/fileserver - pair it with something like this

and boot it off compact flash.

    Re: Smallest machine for Smoothwall

Do you really really need 4 network interfaces? I use an Alix 2C3 from linitx.com. It uses a total of 5 watts - I measured it with an Aldi wattmeter.

I actually have an Alix 2C3, another 2C3 which was cheap on eBay (£45, yay), and an older WRAP 1E. They are all awesoem.

You could add a USB ethernet adapter as the 4th NIC if you wanted, depending on whether it needs to be super-high-speed or not.

That might not be a bad idea in the interests of making it cheaper - I'll look into it. Thanks
