    Using Homeplugs

I have bought a pair of Orange homeplugs. I have a Netgear Router DG834G v5, I have plugged one home plug into the power and into the router and the other homeplug into mains and into Ethernet port on 2nd computer but I cannot connect to internet. The two computers are situated in next door rooms on the same floor and on the same ring main. Any ideas on what is wrong?

    Re: Using Homeplugs

I have never seen or used the Orange Homeplugs but have used similar products... as such have you made sure the plugs can see each other by using the software supplied or manually.

No software was supplied, how do I do it manually?

    Re: Using Homeplugs

check if there are any buttons on the homeplugs. Sometimes there are and these set them into searching mode to find each other and connect.
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

    Re: Using Homeplugs

The software (or buttons) are only normally required if you want to use the encryption features of homeplugs.

You can alsways just plug them in and expect them to work.
Just make sure they are direct into the wall socket, and not on extension cables...

    Re: Using Homeplugs

you may have 2 ring mains, if so they won't work. Plug them in next to each other upstairs and see if they can connect

Jay is right, plug them in next to each other and check. If they're on different ring mains then they won't be able to 'see' each other.

    Re: Using Homeplugs

I'll try plugging the two homeplugs into the same double socket on Monday and post findings

That's not true. I have solwise 200Mbps HomePlugs operating on different rings.

As long as they have a common consumer unit (as most if not all do) then they will be able to talk to each other.

You will get better performance if they are on the same ring though.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

Silly point, but just in case ...

Have you got TWO ethernet cables. One from the router to the first homeplug, and the other from the second homeplug to the PC?

Not 100%, but I will still agree with you.

I run some 85mbs homeplugs ane one is on a different consumer unit.

It does work, but very slowly. Fine for surfing, but u get about 20/30k/s on downloads.
