Connecting wireless router to Wired Router?

My ISP has given me one Thomson TG585 wireless router.

Can I connect this up to my main wired draytek router as a secondary wherby I can take advatange of wireless connection but still deal with Draytek? Is it as simple as connecting them via ethernet cable?

    Any potential issues to consider?

Cannot say for the specific routers that you have but assuming both routers are standard setups for a local network, you will probably need to disable DHCP and firewall in one device if you need machines to be on a common network. Has the Thomson an 'uplink port' that you can use to connect across to the Draytek?

Ensure you enable security on the wireless device so neighbours etc. cannot 'share' your connection.

Yeah, I'm not a networking expert but I do have some experience of this. Above post is right, you will want to configure DHCP so you only have 'one' network. I'll use my current setup as an example. With Sky, you arent allowed to use a router other than the one they provide (your username and pword are pre-programmed in). I disabled the wireless on it, and connected it to a better Netgear wireless router which then is my primary network, and assigns IP addresses, the Sky router just acts as a modem.

The other thing I couldve done, is set up my secondary Netgear as an access point, with the Sky Router as my main network Hub. This way the Sky wouldve assigned IP addresses etc, with the Netgear just acting as kind of a wireless adaptor for the Sky Router.

It shouldnt be too hard to configure either way, ideally you want a situation where you can access both devices without having to enter a new IP address at your computer. I can enter 192.168.0.1 to access my Sky "modem" and 192.168.1.1 to enter the Netgear router. All computers are assigned 192.168.1.xxx IP addreses. I'm not entirely sure how I'm able to access the modems config page with this setup... but somehow I can and it works great for me.

Long and short, it should be possible, you just need to decide whether you want the 585 to be the DHCP server, or just an access point.

Because if you are using the standard subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 for the class C network, the whole of the address space 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255 is assigned to the one subnet (which could contain 65,534 machines )

I would avoid using 2 routers unless you can bridge the draytek as you will enter the realms of double NAT'ing which is a pain in the behind.

Ahh I remember when I had a setup that required double NATing... that was fun. *pah*

Re: Connecting wireless router to Wired Router?

If you want to use the wireless router to connect other devices you need to enable it as DHCP relay. Otherwise WiFi devices cannot receive an IP address.

Basically you hook it up to your Vigor router (using a crossover cable) and activate DHCP relay (on Thompson). Therefore it will dish out IP add's to wireless devices. It is where you configure the security setting as you wish.

@ Champman99: I believe if you "Clone MAC" you can use any other router on Sky. I am on O2 and don't have a spare router but once borrowed a Vigor from work and "cloned the MAC" of my Thompson and it worked.

I hope this makes sense and let's know if we can help.
