Re: Good ADSL Router? Do they exist?!

    Ahhh, didn't spot that one!

The only thing with that router is it's a hard plastic mould and given my past experiance I'd bet it suffers from over-heating and would die after 1-2 years!

The 2800's look a little more solid in their build.

That 2700 is certainly a big more reasonable on the pocket though and I'm not missing any features from the 28xx's... hmm!!

lol gss03, posted at the same time!

Yeah I did notice that, not bothered about the 3g connection, the USB port would be handy for something but not too fussed, already have numerous places to store things anyway!

I've only installed and used 1 draytek 2710 router, but for being a cutdown router it doesn't have a Mickey Mouse interface to manage it. Was quite impressed for the £££ spent on it
*And* i've got it connected back to a main office network (main office using a Draytek 2950) using IPSEC :-) - well chuffed that the 2710 can do this!

    In terms of Cisco

    837 - ADSL 1 only
    857/877 - ADSL 2

What provider fo you use? And if you go cisco I'll send over nice working config and a bit exp on how to do port forwarding etc.

Oh so the 837 would be no good then?

I'm on BE and get around 15Mbps down... i forget what up... about 4Mbps up I think.

Would you rate these over the Draytek ones (if you have experiance of both!)

Re: Good ADSL Router? Do they exist?!

I would say the best router is a computer running openbsd (if thats too hardcore use pfsense) coupled with a Draytek Vigor 120. I have tried may "routers", and have always been disappointed, as soon as I wanted more than use a default, I would discover issues with the router, and companies seem to care more about the branding for the router than actually improving what it does. A nice atom computer either in a router on a stick mode (the way I do it). Or with an additional network card, makes for the best router long term.

Re: Good ADSL Router? Do they exist?!

I cant comment on Draytek, but always hear good things.

Here is some info from my router... 877W

    Code:
    cisco877 uptime is 7 weeks, 6 days, 18 hours, 24 minutes
System returned to ROM by power-on
System restarted at 17:51:42 GMT Mon Oct 26 2009
    System image file is "flash:c870-advipservicesk9-mz.124-24.T1.bin"
I moved it about 2 months ago to a different telephone socket. Hence the downtime.

Netgear Rangemax DG834PN was what I had before BT Vision, couldn't fault it tbh.

I have used a 2800 (2820/2710 predecessor) for about 4 years without any overheating problems. The PSU is an external brick, so most of the PSU components are away from the main unit. I will say that a friend's 2800 died through heat - but that was left in front of a window in Southern France, in direct sunlight - so I guess the temperature was a little high. It still works, but only on one of the ethernet ports - but then if you abuse it to that extent, it isn't really surprising! Mine is wall mounted (in the shade!)

Re: Good ADSL Router? Do they exist?!

If you keep hacving routers die on you, I would also look at the power source too.

I went from a Netgear DG834 GT (which I now use as just an AP) and now have a Draytek 2820 on Bethere, I get a 16mb sync down and 2.5mb sync up, but I also have them on a APC UPS Extension.

Might be worth investing in something like that.

Best I've used is a Sky DG834GT which cost about £15.

Re: Good ADSL Router? Do they exist?!

I have a Buffalo airstation nfiniti. It's been pretty good for the past 6-8 months. The only (and major) problem with it is that it doesn't come with a built in adsl modem. I had assumed they all did and went to HK where they don't need it. Anyway, I've had to make do with another router (3com officeconnect - crap for wireless) to use as the modem. The joys of modern technology.
