Netgear DG834GT limit bandwidth?

Hi guys, I have a few devices in the house connected via wireless to the DG834GT, but when for instance; someone is downloading content of the web i.e watching programmes on BBC iPlayer and 4oD etc, the internet becomes almost unusable for anyone else.

What I wanted to know is that, is there any way I could limit the internet bandwidth with the DG834GT?

Not really with just the GT.

m0n0wall or pfSense either on a PC or an Alix board would be good. It would go inbetween the router and the rest of the PCs. Check linitx.com - they are about £125. They require a time investment to get it set up correctly, though.

Are you sure its not an issue with the speed of the broadband itself?

If you have got one device hammering your internet connection it will obviously be affecting all other users. As already said the DG834 isn't really geared up to prioritise traffic.

I'd look at replacing this with one that supports QoS. I think the Draytek 2710n will do this, but might be best to check Draytek's site http://www.draytek.co.uk/

apart from the 834GT supporting QoS anyway, it sounds like he needs to prioritise by the lan address rather than just by the application.

If you're various laptops/ PC's are connecting using wireless you could enforce a certain connection speed using the wireless software (assuming yours supports it) Not ideal though.
What speed connection do you have? I've never had any problems downloading newsgroup data at full speed while watching HD iPlayer streams and general surfing all at once, that's over a 15Mb BE connection.
