External DNS servers (Pipex) Vs Internal LAN DNS Server

    Hi,

I have captured browsing an online overclocking store by using my external DNS servers stored in the router and then using my LAN DNS server which is a 2003 server (old P3 733, 512MB etc)

Here are the two videos, I can't see much difference tbh yet I'd expect the local DNS to be faster.

    External DNS Servers:

2003 Server DNS Server on LAN:

Due to the size of video files and time it takes to upload with 448Kbit upload I had no time to think about the links I was clicking so I didn't know how many images were in each page etc..

The main performance advantage will be faster queries of cached domains, so if everyone uses google very frequently then google queries will be very quick, if everyone is using widely different domain queries, then performance will be unchanged, or much worse, depending on a bazillion factors.

to be honest you are not really going to see a huge difference in speed.

Re: External DNS servers (Pipex) Vs Internal LAN DNS Server

I concur, this PC has been using my LAN DNS server since yesterday afternoon around this time and browsing the net is exactly the same in terms of how quick pages load.

I used to believe using an internal DNS server would be faster as I can assure you before I had a different version of 2003 server installed on a 512Kbit, yeah that's right - 512Kbit downstream ADSL connection in an old house and it was much faster using the internal DNS server...but that was probably due to the 16x slower (in theory & without overheads taking into account) than this 8128Kbit down connection.
