setting up a nework (adsl)

few questions

got a 98 pc and a xp one, both plugged into a hub

now where do i go ? what do i have to do to allow sharing of files, and sharing of internet?


also my hubs a router, on the box it says connect to 192.168.8.1 , so i did and nothing, how do i connect to it to set it up? as it seems fubared

Does the hub have a built in adsl modem, some routers do some dont. Run the networking tool on the xp cd, you can use it on both PC's. What make/model is your router? Also open my computer, right click on the folders/drives you want to share and select sharing.

well its a mentor router, with adsl modem built in

as its a router i imagined its a hub as well

This worked for me.
1. Sign up for an adsl account with an ISP.
2. Wait for them to give you an activation date, and get some ADSL filters.
3. Plug all your phones in to the filters, you might also have to plug the router into the modem side of one as well, but some mrouters have the filter built in.
4. Plug the PC's into the router.
5. Run the XP network setup of the xp cd. Run on all computers, what ever the version of windows.
6. Select what folders you want to share on each PC. Right click on the folder/drive and select sharing.
7. Setup your router. Should say in your manual, but looks like http://192.168.8.1.
dont forget the last . My ADSL settings are under WAN configuration, logon details go in there.

I just have to set explorer or mozilla to never dial a connection. Most of the setup is taken care of by the XP network wizard.

ok it sorta works but now im stuck

windows 98 se, how do i get it to connect to the router for i/net?
basically, what do i click in internet explorer

In IE go tools, internet options and then connections. Set the connection type to never dial. Should work.
