98, broadband and ISP s/w

Oh, I’m struggling today.

OK, using Windows 98 and a USB broadband modem. If the ADSL line has been activated and the modem installed, should the modem be able to "synchronise" with the ADSL line or do I need to do other things with the machine at this end?

Do I always have to use the (rubbish) software provided by the ISP or can I connect by specifying some settings somewhere? I am even at a bit of a loss as to where to put in things like user name and password if I do not install the ISPs software. Yes I am doing badly today, any help will be much appreciated.

From what I remember from the misty days of yore before I got a router, you can just make a new dial-up connection with your username and password, dialling 0 if it insists you put a number in. I certainly never used any ISP software.

Right cheers, so the ADSL modem should be able to synchronise the line even if I have not actually created a dial up connection with the username and password? Therefore it’s either a problem at their end or a faulty ADSL filter.

considered using a router or ethernet-based modem instead? requires no drivers or dialing up, and will work with any os from BeOS to Plan9

Thanks Using the USB modem is a temporary solution until a router is purchased.
