    Broadband nightmare

    Guys,
    Would appreciate some help.
Just moved back into house after extensive works.
Before we moved out, broadband was fine. Telephone cable had only two wires/ connections instead of the normal 4 (apparently. I'm not an expert. That's what I'm told). Broadband and phone were fine.

    We move out.

We move back in, the phone does not work. Broadband, oddly, DOES, and either gives 0.1Mbps service or a decent 5Mbps service VERY VERY rarely.

Openreach come out. THey test the line. They discover faults at various locations between the junction (pavement outside my house) and the house itself.

They have today laid a new armoured cable between said junction and the house.

The old cable has been disconnected.

    The telephone now works.

But the broadband is still awful.

Rather disappointed, as you can imagine. I thought new cable would mean better speeds like I was used to before the building works.

Does the exchange take time to come to terms with my new telephone cable? Don't see how that can be possible.

My setup: Router distributes internet to various computers via Cat6 wiring in walls. LAN performance is fine, so I'm happy that all the CAT6 is good.

I've tried several microfilters, so it's not that.

    Plusnet is the provider.

Any other info needed, please ask.

    Speedtest results:

    Ping: 553 ms
    Download: 0.10 Mbps
    Upload: 0.15 Mbps

Oh, and here's stat from my router:

    Uptime: 0 days, 0:00:58

    Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 6,560

    Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00

    448kbps??!?!?!?!?!

    Re: Broadband nightmare

Have you run the BT speed test? http://speedtester.bt.com

This is the reply I got from my ISP when I complained about slow speeds:

[they first directed me to the BT speed test and asked me to forward the results]

"At some point during the last 5 days, your sync dropped to between 135-350k, so BT have lowered the profile accordingly. This will raise over the next few days and should return to 7000-7500 as you'd expect on the line."

Maybe it'll just take a few days to sort itself out?

Have you tried your router in the BT test socket?

    Re: Broadband nightmare

Download speedachieved during the test was - 112 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
    Additional Information:
    Your DSL Connection Rate :6560 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps

    From BT line.

    What does IP profile mean?

I googled it and came up with:

    http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/IPprofile.htm

    What is an IP profile?

    [edited for clarity]

Your IP profile is an indication of the maximum throughput speed your line can attain whilst that particular profile is in place.

The IP profile is based on your lowest sync speed, and jumps up in 0.5Mb or 0.25 Mb stages.
So although you may get higher sync speed, your IP profile will limit you to what throughput speed you are likely to achieve.

Only BT Wholesale products have IP Profiles, if you are with an LLU ISP then you wont have an IP profile.

As I understand it, it works like a rev limiter. Only it will delimit itself over the next few days. Hopefully! If not, time to get on to Plus net and see what they have to say for themselves. Maybe it would be a good idea to e-mail them anyway.

    Re: Broadband nightmare

You're getting some conflicting information there, which is unusual. Your router is reporting one speed, but the speed tests are reporting another.

Try disconnecting all your devices, plug your router into the BT master socket and perform the test again.

Not unusual at all when you see this:

So even though the router has a nice sync rate, the BRAS profile is limiting the OP's connection at the DSLAM.

It won't make any difference. If the router were reporting a poor sync rate then it could help but it won't help with a stuck BRAS profile.

    Re: Broadband nightmare

i had a very similar experience, though not as drastic a ping. BT speedtest gave all sorts of weird values and the call centre guy couldn't really explain what they meant. Each time I called they would do something magic with the limiting values, the speed would go up for all of half a day, then I'd be back in the ridiculous position of not even being able to watch iplayer on a connection which according to their own test data was achieving 5Mb/s (paid for up to 8Mb/s package).

One thing that did happen though, was the promised increase in speed building up as they run your line in for a few days. But I found that each time I complained they would re-do this process, and each time they would cap it at a lower speed!!

After months of frustration and getting nowhere talking to BT's friendly but unhelpful call centre I quit and moved to fibre optic broadband from a different provider. I'm a lot happier now.

i'm guessing this isn't trying to blame the broadband problem on an outbreak of Moobs. What's a BRAS profile?

The same as an IP profile (see linky in post above). It probably stands for something like Big Rusty Ancient Submarine

    Re: Broadband nightmare

INtesestingly, speed test using my macbook over wifi gives ping of

    53ms
    down: 4.98Mbps

which is faster than my wired.... the cable from faceplate to PC is cat5e
the cable from router to desktop faceplate is cat6.
Will mixing them make a difference?
