Now I've ended up with something that keeps changing my home page in internet explorer, spybot keeps picking stuff up (registry edits), but as soon as I remove it it multiplies.

Definately sounds like Coolwebsearch or a variant of, d/l and run CWShredder straight away!

Go way I found of stopping alot of spyware is todo 2 things.
I got ZoneAlarm http://www.zonelabs.com as a firewall (its free) and that pretty much stops spyware getting in and in the Pro version which you have to buy you get a pop-up blocker and it's not just a gimmicky one, it actually works and I also change my browser. IE is really vulnerable, something like Firefox is much more secure.
