    Wireless relay/repeater

    Hello:

I have a Motorola Cable Modem Gateway (cable modem and router in same unit), model SBG6580. Works very well.

However, I have a room in the basement where my wireless home phone does not work and where my laptop works wirelessly only very slowly. And someone is moving in there soon, and my computer solutions is either an Ethernet cable or a relay/repeater. I would want to investigate a relay/repeater first.

But I know nothing about what is/might be available. Where should I look? What do I need to know about my gateway to select the right relay/repeater?

    Grateful for your suggestions.

    Regards,

    Hans L

for the internet side i'd probably look at a homeplug setup for the basement

new link wireless homeplug for in the basement with a wired home plug connecting to the router

that way you get full basement coverage

Okay, sounds good. I will check it out, as I have never investigated powerline communications before (although I do know it exists). Thank you!

    Re: Wireless relay/repeater

In my own home, I use Homeplugs, as I need a higher transfer rate than wireless can provide. I have however just installed one of these Wireless Repeaters for £18 off Amazon which has done the job remarkably well.
Some of the older reviews there criticise outdated firmware that they shipped with. The one that I took receipt of had the very latest firmware on it though. It was literally a case of plug it in, go to 192.168.1.254 in a web browser, and press Scan. It'll give you a list of Wireless networks in the area - select your own, and then enter the wireless security key. Hey presto - done! :-)

Fatal (I guess you last name is Saviour :-), that sounds fantastic. I will check that one out as well. I do not need such high through-put in the basement. A relative of mine is moving in, and compared to his old computer, this new setup is going to fly!!!

    Re: Wireless relay/repeater

No problem - it's certainly done the job for the friend who I've set it up for, and I couldn't match anything close to it for the price! If you do decide to go for it and have any problems, feel free to chuck us a PM or post and I'll try my best to provide assistance! That being said, most of the Amazon reviews seem to rate TP-Link's phone assistance as pretty good (though I have no first-hand experience of it) :-).

When you say that you plug it in, do mean the power, or do you have to plug it in to a computer and then do the 192.168.1.254 etc, and then unplug it from the computer?
