Re: Does anybody know the best router?

I am rather dissatisfied with the Thomson TG587nv2 O2 provided me with, and would like to replace it with something better (I assume O2 would allow it, would be good to know if not).

I've got 5 PCs and a few other devices using the connection at my house, with 3 people doing a lot of online gaming. I'll be happy to pay a little extra for a router that will be able to handle this load without much problems. Looks like most people here agree that Draytek is a good choice, but I'd welcome any other possible suggestions.

If it helps I use my Draytek 2820 with O2 and get a full 16/1.4 sync that's very stable. You can configure QoS (although read some reports that it's not perfect) and limit bandwidth per connection, etc.

Been using the 2820N for a while now (couple of years, if I recall) which was an upgrade from the 2800N. 2820N is generally good, but I've recently rolled back to the previous firmware as the latest version seems to have stability issues. Rolled back and it's rock solid again.

Re: Does anybody know the best router?

I've just updated my router to the netgear WNDR3700 and found it to be DAMN fast.

This must be down to the dual core goodness they've implemented into this router and the half-decent firmware it has

    Billion 7800N

It's ~£125, but worth the money. Cable or ADSL (with modem)

Cheap Edimax 7284 works well for the money. Very simple to set up, worked with Orange ADSL with no issues (no simple task) and seems to just work with everything.

      • 4meg of slowness increased to 5meg nice Billion 7800N

Re: Does anybody know the best router?

+1 Billion 7800N, works excellently, fast and very stable.

Be careful of the Zyxel if you ever intend to get an Android HTC phone. I had a Zyxel P660 which was stable and fast (just slightly slower than the Billion) but it wouldn't hold a connection with my Desire Z. HTC have difficulty with certain routers.

Draytek Vigor 2820N has a great option for two lines, you can have failover or split demands down each line as you see fit. The Billion only does failover with its 2nd line.

Re: Does anybody know the best router?

Some interesting comments on the billion here

    http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/dsl...800n.html?vc=1

However the thread is quite old, so later firmware may have improved things. I think I'd stick with the Draytek 2820.

Re: Does anybody know the best router?

Billion have the best support I've ever seen. Since I've had it (4 months) they've released 3 new firmwares for it. -Usually mini fixes that people have reported to them.

    Plus it now supports IPv6

    Gigabit LAN
ADSL modem + ethernet input (cable)
    Wireless N

    Static DHCP

    etc etc

Hope no one minds me linking this..

Re: Does anybody know the best router?

My anuts been running a Billion 7800n since X-mas which I bought for her. Bearing in mind she has a family of 5, overall theirs :

    3 PCs connected
    2 Laptops connected
    2 Xboxs connected
    1 PS3 connected
    1 Ipad connected
    2 Ipods connected
    1 Iphone connected
    1 Nokia Smartphone connected

I'm sure theirs more I can't recall, needless to say if their were any issues I would of heard about them by now lol.

Myself I've got a DGND3300v2 which I highly recommend if you need dual band.

Not much about wireless performance here, Linksys E3000 and E4200 are the best for this.
