    FreeNAS vs Amahi (NAS)

    As title really!

    I'm quite used to using the Linux command line so using administering BSD wouldn't take much learning (i hope). So is there any advantage of one over the other? More features?

    Tried installing amahi on a virtual pc this morning and I must say it does seem a bit fisher price!! Am I answering my own question?

    What I'm wanting to achieve is a general NAS box (using hardware I already have). DNLA server would be a bonus (not sure if freenas has this) but mainly a place to backup my photos docs etc in one nice easy to access-central-server-me-buff. Would like to automate backups from win7/vista/xp too if possible.

    TIA

    Can't comment on Amahi, but Freenas 7 has Fuppes for media serving, Freenas 8 does not.

    Re: FreeNAS vs Amahi (NAS)

    Freenas 8 is now more of a "SME" product and has a lot of media server stuff removed from it, there's a fork of sorts called openmediavault that is meant for more media-centric NAS use - but it's not available yet. http://blog.openmediavault.org/

    Assuming you can do BSD because you can do Linux is a potential mistake... but not necessarily. If you're used to administering various flavours of Linux, it's pretty easy, but if you're used exclusively to Debian based stuff (e.g. Ubuntu), you'll find nothing is in the damn place you expect it to be!
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Re: FreeNAS vs Amahi (NAS)

    Thanks guys.

    I'm leaning towards ahami now tbh! My main linux distro is arch linux, which uses a ports stylee thingy-ma-bob iirc, not sure if layout of fs is similar to freenas tho! Just in case I change my mind would it be hard to jump onto freenas?

    TIA

    Steve K is the master of super fast network storage...

    That's from my work PC to one of our fileservers across the network (the best thing - you can do this from multiple desktops to it... )

    Re: FreeNAS vs Amahi (NAS)

    I use amahi and am really happy with it! Very easy to set up and configure and 'Greyhole' is a very nice implementation of 'Drive Extender' in my opinion.
