Anyone tried this? Its great fun =) [and completely legal]

Basically it invoves driving[or walking] around looking for wireless networks.

all you need is a laptop and a WiFi Card, and off you go. Then you just need some software to scan for the networks and your set to go. Most network cards have built in software to scan - my netgear card does - but there is 3rd party software outthere although the compatability isnt great.

I found hundreds of networks in my town [sale, near manchester], and the scary thing is that 90% of them werent protected! If i were some nefarious cracker [or a nice hacker who wants to help] it would be too easy to log on to the network and do what you want with it....still its fun looking =)

Get yourself a GPS module - Makes it even more fun when you've got a nice map plotted with all the access points on.

BTW the software is called netstumbler, and it works on both pc's and pda's (There's also WiFiFoFum for pda's too)

yeah i have 0.4, my nic is a netgear WG511 802.11g (or b) PC card

just says that it isnt supported

yeah =) till then i need to sort my networkin problem with my lappy and main PC, got em connected over the WLan and they can ping each other, just can't see any shares or each other. least it aint a layer 3 problem =)

Ebuyers value 11mbps card works just fine - an absolute steal at under £15

That's cause the cheap kit tends to be based on very standard chipsets.

ebuyers card is only 11mb/s...ie 802.11b..and it only supports 64bit wep, doesnt do roaming, or the other newer ones which i cant remember =)

payin twice the amount for me netgear one is defo justified - even if it doesnt work with netstumbler, the fact that it works fine with netgears own scanning software means it aint a big prob

Is there anywhere online where you can share your WiFi?? (somewhere that lists shared hotspots)

I've got WiFi broadband and am willing to share it; obviously if you were a neighbour I'd be a bit peeved off if you were leeching my bandwidth constantly - but if you're passing through Faringdon and want to check your e-mails on your WiFi laptop then I wouldn't mind.

But it would nice if it was reciprocated elsewhere.

It looks very much like you have to run their software on a box that becomes a community sever.

Not really the kind of thing I was after.
