ADSL2+ Modem

When i switch providers O2 want my router back and my next provider doesn't supply one. Is there anyone making just the modem anymore? I have a D-Link DIR-655 router which is great however it doesn't have a modem built in (AFAIK) and if possible it would be good to just get the modem rather than turning a crappy router into just a modem.

If this isnt possible and i need to get a modem/router, what should i go for given i don't really want to spend over the odds on something that will have all its routing features switched off?

There are a number of ADSL2+ modems out there but I'm yet to see one in use. Although I can't recommend a modem, I can suggest a used O2 Wireless box or BeBox (e.g. Thomson 585 v7), you can get one for £15 delivered off the ebay, flash it with the generic firmware and enable bridge mode, i.e. using the unit only as a modem. This approach has been 100% reliable for the two 585 v7's I've been using in bridge mode for the last year.

These have been recomended to us recently. Works for ISPs that don't allow PPPoE as it acts as a true bridge.

Apparently it's just plug in and connect up your ethernet router/firewall applience, pop the login details in and away you go.

I've been running a Sky router I got on eBay, that's just a rebranded Netgear DG834GT after you recover and reflash it (http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/skyDG834GT_flash.htm) since 2008. I've flashed it with DGTeam firmware rather than stock Netgear and it seems to sync a bit faster but I haven't really delved into all the features.

I have a Vigor 120 connected to an ASUS RT-N16.

Did you use the standard one that the ISP provided you with prior to buying it? If so did you notice any increase in connection speed? Seriously considering it

I also use a Vigor 120. In fact my connection speeds dropped a *little* (about 5%) from the BeThere provided SpeedTouch, but this is due to the chipset mismatch. Of course, what I lost in speed, I more than made up for in stability. That paired with a decent router should give you much more uptime than any cheap modem/router combination .
