Just to give everyone some closure ...
We're in the new house now, without too much trouble. We've stuck with plusnet in the end, not necessarily because of any particular benefit of the services they can provide, but because we're having to get the phone line reconnected (landlord apparently had it disconnected when he moved out grrrrr) and plusnet are half the price of anyone else for getting a new line put it!
That said, it's going to be a couple of weeks before we get service again - thank the lord for Android phones working as wifi hotspots, eh
Second thread bump - BT engineer called at 12noon today to install the line. 11pm I check my plusnet account (tethered through my phone) and it says my broadband is installed and active. 10 minutes later, router is on, WAP is running, and I've got broadband back
Thumbs up plusnet - great service. Now, to see what line speed I'm actually getting (estimate is only 3.5Mb...)
Woop, now the mod team has it's full complement of Jims
Indeed
Sadly, despite the exchange being fttc ready, I can't get fttc on my current line. There go all my plans for running my own web and mail server from home
FTTC relies on both the exchange and the street cabinet you are connected to having been upgraded. It'll happen in time
Is there an echo in here?
"In a perfect world... spammers would get caught, go to jail, and share a cell with many men who have enlarged their penises, taken Viagra and are looking for a new relationship."
Yeah, I figured I might contact either plusnet or BT to see if they've got an estimate for when fttc will reach my line. It's a bit frustrating though, because we've moved from an fttc-enabled line and I was really looking forward to those 8-10mbps upload speeds
Erm, not that I've noticed?
"In a perfect world... spammers would get caught, go to jail, and share a cell with many men who have enlarged their penises, taken Viagra and are looking for a new relationship."
Upgrade time
More than somewhat
EDIT: *sigh* or not, just got an email from plusnet - "There's been a problem with processing your broadband order."
EDIT2: OK, call has been escalated to the fibre team, current opinion from plusnet is that it's because BT's records haven't been updated yet.

When BT is involved, my experience is the proverbial law is invoked far more frequently than in other contexts....
