High Gain Ariel for WIFI Router

    Hi Guys,

I have a DIR-655 and no matter where i put it in the flat i dont seem to get quite good enough coverage. I have tried everything i can but it seems my walls are too thick. I figured i might get some better Ariel to try and improve the coverage. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I bought some 12dBi aerials from eBay for my 655. Improved things quite a bit but I'm not convinced they are 12dBi (the original aerials are 3dBi and I wouldnt say the signal is 8 times better but it is better. Tried to find you alink on ebay but my history only goes back 60 days so cannot see where I bought them from. Didn't cost a lot prob cheap chinese stuff but worth a punt if nobody comes up with a better solution.

If I can get some money together I am looking at turning off wifi on the 655 and adding an AP: http://www.wifigear.co.uk/ubiquiti-u...int-long-range

I added a bigger ariel to my Netgear DG834GT when I was with Sky and it improved things a lot. I also added one to the PCI card on my PC.

    They do work.

Re: High Gain Ariel for WIFI Router

Another way would be to use the Asus RT-N10 routers as 'wireless repeaters' to give better signal. Press the orange button on the back, select repeater, insert same SSID and password as the 'main router' and voila... extra range and coverage at hardly any costs.

I've 3 of these for this job at home and they work fantastically at giving better coverage and have another bonus in that they also allow any wired devices plugged into the routers to gain web access as well (ideal for xboxes and sky boxes )

NB they are 150mbps and the DIR655 is 300mbps although this may not be such an issue if you have a poor signal already.

Re: High Gain Ariel for WIFI Router

reading with great interest, got a 655 on here, solid as a wired router but wireless performance is alot less than i was expecting, range wise that is.

Using new ariels is an idea though, cant you try and make one with a pringles tube? I need to read up on that diy idea. For me the main issue is that the router is near the front of the house first floor and my room is right at the back of the house on the second floor, with this house being over a hundred years old, its made out of solid stone/concrete walls(i believe, no hollow walls except for the bathroom really), so all signals get destroyed . I do have ethernet to my room so i think ill have a look at setting up another router as a switch (got a spare one i found yesterday!) but 3 better ariels would be the better option as its one less thing online!

Re: High Gain Ariel for WIFI Router

The problem with a repeater for me is that itsl already quite a congested area with wireless routers. I pick up one on nearly every channel and occasionally have to change the channel mine runs on because other people are set to auto and theirs flick about. Dont really want to add another one to the mix!

The pringles tin works if you want a directional antennae but i was hoping to grab something that could improve the omnidirectional capabilities really.
