Shouldn't make all that much difference in gaming tbh.
Bandwidth isn't the issue with online gaming, it's latencies (The amount of time that a packet takes to travel to its destination) that you need to keep an eye on.
Generally, Cable is better than BT phone lines for latencies, but with BT phone lines, it depends on many many factors.
Why would you do that?
Going to take him forever for him to download and update games now with that speed.
For example, Total Warfare: Shogun had a 20GB update last night and BF3 updates are pretty large as well.
Thanks for the replies havea friends and family discount so moving for that reason
Sounds like a bad move to me, since Virgin was going to increase your speed from 30mb to 50mb in a few months.
Lots of fixes and updates, for example, 22 new maps.

Are you sure? According to steam, it's still under 16GB in total, and my patch was just over 5GB.
Anyway, as mentioned previously, changing download speed won't negatively affect gaming, it'll just make your downloads slower. Whether Sky will have a better or worse ping than Virgin, that's hard to say.
