What’s the diff if any between ADSL and Broadband?
Broadband is defined by OFCOM as an "always on" internet connection with at least 512kb/s download.
ADSL is one technology by which a broadband link can be implented. In this country, you can also get broadband via cable (NTL/telewest), digital radio (TELE2) or Satellite.

thank you but i still don't really see the main diff, i'm 16! maybe when i'm older!
Yep, ADSL comes through your standard BT phone line so in theory is the least hassle to install. NTL/telewest will have to dig up your road to lay a new cable.

ADSL is a technology used to implement broadband, so they are not really directly comparable.
As Above - Broadband is the result gained by using adsl / cable technology - as a comparison you could say TV(sky / cable) is = to broadband and ADSL is = to satelite or cable.
Basically ADSL is the technology - the method of connecting to broadband.
ok thanks, which is better
Did you read any of the above posts?
To get broadband, you need either an ADSL, cable, or satellite connection.
As for "which is better" it depends what you can get, and what you want to do with your connection.
Simple guide to choosing:
If you have cable TV, like it, and can put up with NTL go for cable.
Otherwise, If you can get ADSL (check on BT's site) get ADSL
Otherwise, If you're in a TELE2 coverage area (check their site) get digital radio
Otherwise, If you can afford it - get satellite
Otherwise, get ISDN and cry.

umm apologies but i did laugh hereOriginally Posted by SolidMGSnake
Cable broadband Can be superior to adsl ifyour like the only person in your street using it, and your talking about raw ul/dl speed only
S/ADSL is better overall. Generally the impact of having more than one user in a street is zero on an ADSL line, so you normally get 512k speeds 24/7. Its also alot simpler to install than cable, no digging up roads etc.. Plus the customer support is usually better and theres much less downtime since NTL are just pap.
I've had both cable and adsl in the past and adsl wins out every time =) just dont go with BT, from early next year their bandwidth caps will turn them from a great ISP into one of the Uks worst
If I remember correctly broadband is anything over 56k, NTL got in trouble for labeling their 150k service as "High speed broadband" and not just broadband.Originally Posted by Rythmic
It still has to be always on tough I think.
Their are loads of differences between cable and adsl, the best way to think about it is adsl is electricity coming down twisted copper wires and cable is light coming down a very thin glass "wire".
As said above there are different ways that cable and adsl work with contention, equal products I would say go for adsl (ie both 1/2mb or 1mb etc).
Cable will eventually take over as its a better technology, copper will always be limited by line loss whereas cable will have much less as speed increases. This advantage is not you important mind.

Lets be fair here, BT were always one of the UK's worst ISPs.Originally Posted by Spud1

Ive been in a place with cable where i know at least 15 people out of 20 in the street had the same isp with same speed cable connexion as me - and a test was arranged so we all downloaded vast amounts at the same time and we were still maxed out speed wise. However, a similar situation where i was in an adsl location - with only 4 other people i knew of in the street on the same isp - as soon as they started to download, the connexion i was using went to ****!
yeah ok thanks for the info
