    New Cable Gigabit Router

    Hello,

I would like to have a gigabit network, mainly, in preperation of getting a NAS. At the moment, with Sky Fibre Optic, I'm using a Sky Sagemcom F@st 2504N Router which is connected to a BT Openreach Fibre Optic Modem. The Sky Router doens't have gigabit ethernet ports. Only 10/100 Mbps.

I also own a Belkin F5D8636-4 v1 Router but I'm almost certain this doesn't have gigabit ports either.

The Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 motherboard I have does have a gigabit ethernet port so the only weak spot I have is the router.

Can anyone suggest a Cable Wireless N Router with at least 4 gigabit ethernet ports to replace the Sky Router and BT Openreach Modem please? I've seen this TP-Link one which seems quite good, but I think it's just a router, meaning I'll still need the BT Openreach Modem.

The router must to MAC Spoofing too to fool sky. My Belkin Router has this as I used that for Sky Unlimited Broadband before I got Fibre Optic.

Any help will be greatly appreaciated.

    Re: New Cable Gigabit Router

Just use a gigabit switch to run the network, with a connection to the Belkin router. The router will handle DHCP and DNS requests, the 100Mb/s link won't slow down your internet access which will be slower than that.

If you do want to change your router, have a look at the Draytek offerings.

    Re: New Cable Gigabit Router

I recently did what Peterb says, I purchased a NAS and wanted gigabit speeds but was put off by the cost of replacing my ADSL2 router and so took a chance on a TP_Link 5 port switch for about £15 and so far everything is fine!

    Re: New Cable Gigabit Router

    Hi, thanks for the replies.

Yes, a switch does sound like a better option. I'm having trouble finding a decent priced cable router. A switch is a much better financial option.

    Many thanks for your suggestions.

    Re: New Cable Gigabit Router

I'm planning to turn the Sagem into a passthrough modem and then use another router when Sky come to fit my fibre on Thursday.

Until someone figures out how to bypass the MER on sky it looks like this is one of the only ways to do it.

    Re: New Cable Gigabit Router

Yes, that's the main problem I was having looking for a Router, I forgot. That Sky Fibre uses MER negotiation rather than PPPoA etc.

That does seem to be the usual solution I've seen, Lee. I'll go for the cheaper Switch option! lol
