Home Hub or not to Home hub that is the Question

Just wanted anyone's opinion on the Home hub 3 for Bt infinity 2 (Fibre Optic), I get mixed reviews online including from Amazon. But worryingly not consistantly good reports.

I am having a look at the Netgear N900 router but I just wanted to check, before I take the plunge, that the Home hub 3 is really not that good.

Also anyone have any overheating issues with the BT Openreach Modem for infinity?

Hi mate afaik the over heating issues with the modem were resolved with the last version issued and certainly mine remains as cool as a cucumber.

As for the HH3 mine was ok but I decided not to use it long term as I had a better Netgear and then Draytek router.

Early versions did have a problem with overheating if they weren't mounted on a vertical surface.

I think that was resolved in later versions. At the risk of tempting fate, I haven't had a problem with mine.

Did you find any performance increases moving off Home hub 3?

Re: Home Hub or not to Home hub that is the Question

Most people seem to dislike the home hub. Take a look at the Billion 7800N

As the others said the overheating issues were resolved with a new revision modem.

Not bad, but I'm looking for QoS and Dual band for maximum performance and future proof.

I also got one these PCI wireless cards too to maximise the router useage

The other thing is the Home Hub 3 seems to be made of a heavily modified Thompson model i.e using old junk and putting it into a new sparkling case with new gimmicks such as 'Smart wireless'.

The other issue I have, is the well documented security flaws with the WPS and permanetly opened ports and of course using your Home hub as a wireless hotspot for the public to use which they don't tell you that unless you research it. Someone how I don't wamt others to use my connection looking at illegal stuff and me getting the can for it. Nor do I want BT to remote access my modem and potentially my connection either.

Re: Home Hub or not to Home hub that is the Question

I have had my home hub 3 for a while now and never had a problem with it, I have 2 lads connected via wifi on x boxes, my wife is on a laptop and I run my computer and laptop plus there's all the mobiles connected to the Home Hub, we need to reboot the Home Hub once in a blue moon, personally I would just try it out and if it does not suit you then buy another but give the Home Hub a chance.

Ok, how about the Asus RT-N56U, it's Dual Band and has QoS http://uk.asus.com/Networks/Wireless_Routers/RTN56U/

I know someone who bought this recently and they say its excellent.
