Powerline ethernet, extension cables yay or nay?

I have a PC about as far from my routers as is feasible in my house. I can't run a cable because I dislike the idea of being murdered. Unfortunately, I also have a lack of sockets in the house (don't ask me, I didn't put them there), is it possible to use These things with extension cables? I have one like This by my PC, and a standard surge protected by my routers. Same loop, no spare bits to play off of though. Thoughts? is this a viable set up or must I trust wifi with my life?

Ive used to use 85Mbps Powerlines with decent effect, had no problems playing online games and general browsing, but my download speeds were awful had to eventually put in Ethernet cable due to getting only 2MB compared to a possible 7.5MB.

Why not try the passthrough version, you don't lose a plug.

This will probably sound silly, but is it fine to plug an extension cable into that? as with most things, don't stick extensions into extensions unless you like the smell of burning.

I do not know if that is going to be safe or not.

I have never tried connecting my powerlines through an extension lead for the same reasons you described, i don't like the smell or the thought of burning. My powerlines plugs did get very hot though, something to be wary of.

Thats definitely a problem to consider. I hate the idea of sticking with my wifi, its so up and down. Time to go sit in a corner and see how I feel about it I guess.

i think wifi range extender may be a better bet

I have used a 200Mbps pair before, didn't like the speed though

Re: Powerline ethernet, extension cables yay or nay?

the general rule with extension cables and powerline is that you should use non power surge protected ones if you are connecting the adaptor into the extension. The speed you will actually receive is hard to predict though, its very dependant on the cabling in your house, if its old, you might not get great results.

the extension going through the passthrough should be fine, no obvious danger there. The issue comes about really when you have lots of high current equipment on the multiple extension leads, if not protected properly the cable on the first extension will heat up and melt.

Question Re: Powerline ethernet, extension cables yay or nay?

Is there a significant quality improvement when going from homeplug to ethernet cable? I mean the electricity supply is subject to some interference I imagine, would ethernet have any positive effect on lag spikes etc in fast paced games for example?

I'd rather have proper cat6 cabling tbh even tho it's a pain to route in my place, but the electric wiring here must be yonks old (with few sockets) and I guess putting Homeplugs into extensions would make things even worse...

Sorry if this is OT btw.

Re: Powerline ethernet, extension cables yay or nay?

I'm using Belkin Powerline HD adapters in an old Victorian house with pretty old wiring over a fair distance, and I notice very little difference in quality between ethernet and powerline, except approx 6-12ms increase in latency which is absolutely fine for the purposes for which I am using the connection. With my BT Infinity 60mbit connection I notice absolutely no difference in throughput ethernet vs. powerline. Initially, the reliability of the connection was a bit sketchy and I'd have to reboot the adapters from time to time, however following a firmware update they've been comfortably running for a few months with no variation in throughput. Hope that this helps!

its very much a 'your mileage may vary' situation and impossible to truely predict unfortunately. Pleiades' experience certainly gives the situation hope, but a couple of google searches and it doesn't take long to find people who have had the opposite.
Fortunately its not that expensive to go for something fairly basic, even if it doesnt work as well as you had hoped, its still a useful thing to have IMO.
