    Creating a Wi-fi access point

The flat I am renting comes with internet access (a really good one). However it can only be connected via an ethernet cable. I am not sure how the whole thing is setup exactly, but I am guessing that it uses DHCP since I never had to set anything up on my PC. Just plug it in and it automatically set the ip address and everything I need to get online.

That's fine if I only need access on my PC. But as I will soon need Wi-Fi access for my phone, would it be possible to just plug the ethernet cable to any modern wi-fi router and let it act as:

    1. Wi-Fi hotspot for my mobile devices.
    2. A switch so that I can connect more than one computer via LAN.

It doesn't sound like there would be any reason why it can't be done, but then again I've never tried. Back in the UK, I was on ADSL so I'd plug the router/modem to the phone line. I've never tried to link two routers / switch.

So first, is it a straightforward process? Is there any to watch out for before I go out and buy a router?

I can't see why not. Any 4 port wireless router will do

You need a DSL (cable) router only - an ADSL router will not have an ethernet WAN port. If your ISP limits which device is connected, you may need to set the router to MAC spoofing mode and input the MAC address of your PC. In most cases however this will not be necessary.
