I'll think about it over the Bank Holiday weekend but the utilisation in my area doesn't seem too bad as you say.

It's certainly a wider issue and not just a Virgin thing, but I think that a 10% upload:download ratio annoying.

I've got to be honest and say the 20Mb/s upload on Infinity sold it for me, but that could still be higher

Re: Virgin Media - How (bad) are they?

The Shub and Shub 2 can have 4 and 8 channel bonding on the upstream, so maybe plans are afoot to increase the upstream at some point. I kind of hope so, but torrenting might be even more of a problem if it is increased, folks uploading far more

9 meg is good but I would expect at least 40mb if you are on 120mb. I was on 3mb for my 60mb and it was poor.

Another quick question..how is VM for games?
I play some PC and PS3 multiplayer in the evenings and wondered if anyone has feedback regarding this?

My ping on sky ADSL is 50 and my wife and I can both be online and have no issues. If your with VM then I can imagine even less issues than me, and I have none.

Any reason you'd expect that? It's not advertised at that, and looking at my graphs from my pfsense box I can see that I *very* rarely use above around 3Mb/s (ie other than when running speedtests), that's including a few uploads to Dropbox and the like.

plusnet are very good for ADSL, i install a lot of hotspots in banks and fast food joints, they all use plusnet.

Re: Virgin Media - How (bad) are they?

My experience of Virgin is fairly positive, internet is very quick, always get about 2mg more than I pay for when downloading they seem to have sorted the traffic shaping too, phone is fine, its a phone line. TV not so much not a fan of the Tivo box bit noisy and horrid OS and getting all the HD chans means having their XL pack which is expensive imo... So I get my TV through Sky. Some good deals going atm tho for example I have a Tivo M tv pack (basically free-view) 30mg BB with supahub and L phone for £31pm. Cant really argue with that.

Re: Virgin Media - How (bad) are they?

Been with Virgin about 3 years now. Can't complain. Soooo much better than the old ADSL line which died twice and week with endless rubbish copper failures. With ADSL I always got stuffed by nobody taking responsibility - phone ISP, get told it is a BT problem, but BT won't talk to me direct as they will only talk to ISP, who say no it is a BT problem........

Had a few on and off probs with the basic V box needing the card pulled out to reset or losing HD channels, but nothing major.

Found Virgin customer service prompt to reply and generally quite good.

They can be a bit annoyingly sales-y as a company at times which does grate a bit, but it isn't overbearing.

But generally, stuff works. With BT based tech, stuff didn't work.

Re: Virgin Media - How (bad) are they?

I had the 50Mbps which was upgraded to 100Mbps then 120Mbps.

In general the quality of connection was good for file transfer, up and down, but the ping rate was terrible and I did notice that if using it for an extended period of time I would notice drop-outs, like listening to internet radio for a few hours.

The SuperHub is pretty naff as well, wireless is terrible and I lost count of how many times I had to reset the thing.

Oh and the call centers are the worst call centers I have ever dealt with.

I guess all in all the Virgin experience was pretty bad, but now I'm on 8Mbps ADSL (if I'm lucky) I do really miss the speed

Re: Virgin Media - How (bad) are they?

i am stuck with the superdud1, even though i am on 120mb broadband they want to charge me to get one that works. i should be able to use the wifi on the sh and have my asus router located at the other side of the house as a repeater.
