London has the greatest broadband devide in the developed world

I will be moving house in a month or two closer into central London (Zone 1) in Angel. However I seem to be having a problem trying to find anywhere that offers an internet connection from the 21st century

Here is one of the 'best' offers after hunting around, I must add that FTTx isn't available...

You can choose BT Broadband now offering:

    2.5Mb *
    Estimate download speed

    0.50Mb-4Mb
    Download speed range
When I called and asked about the upload speed I was told it would be no faster than 384kb due to being on ADSL1 and I'd be lucky to get even close to those speeds... lucky... !

I thought London was supposed to be further along than this in 2013. I called EVERY major ISP, I can't seem to get Cable with NTL Business or Virgin Media as there is no coverage, and all the other ISP's either only offer ADSL or the ones that do offer FTTx cannot supply it to any of the addresses I've tried.

I will be working from home and will require an upload speed of AT LEAST 5mb. After calling BT Buisiness (who I am with currently) they've said the only other option would be something called Sharedband, which is basically 2 ADSL connections bonded together and this would wind up costing me an initial 650 quid for setup/modems etc, and 136 a month! for an absolute maximum speed of 48mb down and 2.6mb up (more likely to be double 2.5Mb down and less than a meg up)

I use the internet A LOT!, require a stable 24/7 connection and so a mobile connection is out of the question. 4G is also out of the question due to the cost and lack of infrastructure in the UK (we are also one of the furthest behind on mobile cost/speeds). I worked it out and the amount of bandwidth I consume per month (close to a terrabyte, sometimes just over!) would end up costing me somewhere in the region of 8 grand a month.

I am currently with BT Business Infinity and get around 174Mb down and 38Mb up at the best of times! I am willing to go as low as 40Mb down and 4Mb up, that's at the VERY ABSOLUTE minimum I'd settle for though and would prefer faster, Somewhere in the region of 80Mb down and 18Mb up would be ideal.

My budget is no more than €100 euro a month for the connection, Is there anything I can do or am I going to be stuck with pre-2000's internet?

Just a quick note to add to the end, How on earth do you people cope with living in a country with bad weather AND bad internet? I could manage one or the other but living with both would drive me to madness!

You have a few LLU providers, but it's dense there so it'll be stretched. Other than that, unfortunately..... tough, buy a different house?

You exchange is enabled for all major services, including BT Infinity, which means it is your road/location of the house on it that is the problem.

The companies to talk to, based on your exchange should be...

LLU Services (up to 16Mbit down/1Mbit up): TalkTalk Business (formerly Pipex), Sky and O2/BeThere (ask BeThere about line bonding).

Fibreoptic: None. Be sure to register your interest on the BT Infinity website, so they let you know ones they enable your road.

If you get a chance, talk to some of your neighbours up and down the road. May be you can work out a shared broadband deal with one of them, provided any of them can get fibre optic broadband that is of course.

If you can't get FTTx or Virgin Media cable, and the ADSL speed is low, then there's not a lot of choice unless you spend a huge amount of money. But it might be worth contacting http://www.urbanwimax.co.uk just in case you're in their coverage and they're in your price range.

    Sadly not, a 2mb/2mb service would cost me 399, and a 10mb/10mb service 600 a month!

I'll just have to be super vigilant when choosing somewhere to live and make sure I can get a FTTx service. This country really sucks for internet I didn't realize quite how far behind we were in 2013. Even some 3rd world countries get better internet speeds than we do it's a real shame.

I don't know how BT choose where to install FTTx, but they're doing it wrong. Where I live, and also where my parents live, there is both Virgin Media cable and FTTC, and good lines for ADSL. Yet there's still plenty of places with nothing but very poor ADSL.

When last moving house I looked up each house on SamKnows just to make sure it had decent connectivity. You can't assume anything where BT are involved.
