    Network issues

I have connected to my home network but every 5- 10 minutes I lose connection and the inbuilt wireless adapter cannot even find the network for two minutes or longer. Then it reconnects by itself or I have to reset the router itself. I have lost connection 12 or more times during a 2 hour time. A windows error popped up during one of the connection losses stating that there was an ip conflict but didn't give any additional information. I looked up on different forums and could not find any help except for using ipconfig commands ipconfig /release and ipconfig/renew, which didn't even do anything. Anyone know any solutions for this problem.

    Re: Network issues

Releasing and renewing the IP address won't make any difference if the laptop can't even find the wireless network.

    A few things to try:

    - Update drivers for the wireless adapter (try this first)
    - Update firmware for the router
    - Change the wireless network to use a different channel

The IP conflict is a bit unusual, the router should realise it's the same laptop requesting the validity of the IP address it had previously been assigned and should either OK it or not but seeing a conflict is strange.

bit more info please, such as wireless router make and model, adapter make and model, is the same issue present on other wireless adapters, such as those on a mobile phone or tablet?

Violence and Lubrication is the solution to fixing everything, if it still doesn't work, you need more lubrication.

    Re: Network issues

I had this when my flatmate and I were both logging in using the same brand of wireless dongle. They seemed to fight for the same IP. I went into the router and assigned IP ranges by mac code and it solved the problem. It also helped work out which greedy muggins was hogging all the bandwidth.

Edit: that was on a D-Link router and D-link wireless dongles

That'd be very, very unusual. I can only think of that happening if the adapters were set to have a static IP address or if they for some reason had the same MAC address.

you're telling me. Never had that problem before or since. I think it was something on his machine - he had some weird configuration I never could quite figure out. Like I said, manually assigning him an IP range on the router solved the issue. The dongles had separate MAC addresses though otherwise they were identical. I wondered whether it was drop-out or channel change on the wireless with both dongles trying to reconnect at the same time, and the router doing a poor job of assigning the local addresses. Whatever it was giving every machine in the house a static local ip solved the problem and everyone's connection behaved far more stably. I was pulling a steady 35Gb/s over that wireless when LAN was 46Gb/s. Very happy with that.
