    Re: Identifying the problem

Inssider polling the wireless device could increase latency, so it's possible it was just that.

If it's happening fair regularly, it sounds like it could be either someone getting home and starting their PC+torrent client for example, or possibly someone's using online backup which is scheduled to run at around that time every day?

Sharing an internet connection with a load of users using consumer WiFi is just asking for trouble TBH. Is there no way they'd run some CAT5 to your room or something?

    Re: Identifying the problem

I tried to re-create a torrent situation. Didnt really affect anyone. However, it could be just that evening is prime time and alot of students log on at that time.

Unfortunately, ethernet is not possible. There is some wire that goes to the AP, tried to plug it in my laptop and didnt work. I dont think they can/want to provide the internet the other way. Even if they did, their router which is handling all the student accounts/connections is bad (ie the cause).

I could get a separate connection, but apparently there is no tel line here and it would cost me £50 to get one installed -_-

If you mean the router you linked to earlier, it's not bad at all - the problem appears to be with the radio interface with so many clients sharing channels, there's nothing the router can do about that.

What APs are they using? It could be a problem if they're using a cheap consumer one for instance.

From the video you can see that the local pings go high up as well with the internet pings, that's definitely internal issue.
Are you able to use 5ghz frequency?
Check if there is any microwave which is interfering with the signal (yes! these will interfere with 2.4 ghz wifi), do the test yourself, just turn it on while running these pings.

    Re: Identifying the problem

You've got one AP per flat which are then connected to the router you linked then? Do you know where the cable run for the AP goes? We had not dissimilar issues when we ran cables between flats in my halls using the dry risers. Putting them near the power lines ended up with random connection issues when microwaves, kettles etc were on.

Nope my chip cant run on 5Ghz. Tried the microwave part too. Atleast the microwave in my flat is okay.

The AP's are hanging from the ceiling and the wiring goes all the way back to the mail hall, where the router is enclosed in a box. No idea whats happening in the walls.

Its been okay for the past few days, could play a game or two during evenings. I haven't been monitoring rigorously (limit to how much I can after 3 months ><), but then the internet seems fine too. Could be that some of the students have already left for christmas holidays.
