while im sure ill get shot down by saying this, i am a fan of bt. They are usually reliable (lets forget the dns issue over the weekend, it didnt affect me as mine all resolves through google), their customer service is probably a little better than the likes of talk talk, and the homehub is actually an amazing piece of kit. Its got great wireless range (thats ac, so much faster than n), and the modem sync makes the most out of you line. I would however recommend turning off the bt-fon or whatever they call it, dont want people connecting to your internet and using your bandwidth! Also disable CG-nAT and the bt helper page as it breaks things like vpn etc.
Most of us don't need to use the by the script customer service as we can trouble shoot our connection and reset our routers e.t.c.
However I agree Talk talk is really awful, ordered broadband once from them 2 years ago and they quoted an engineer would come in 4 months time and they weren't kidding. Called BT and they could give me one the following week.
BT customer service in general are based overseas which is not great and together with script reading is really a bad combo. Their TV service is also awful and not worth it for essential glorifed free view.
Sky I find is better with their call centres based in UK and actually treat you as an individual.

It depends by what you mean by "nice" download and upload speeds, but I've always found Plus.net to be great for decent BB at good value. We're currently on their Unlimited Broadband contract, with no problems. Streaming HD Netflix works great (where we are) and for everything else too: so I would recommend it.
for me Best Value means paying for support and awesome bandwidth.. not being cheap.
So.. Zen

For me the BT Sport package was a big factor in choosing BT.
I've never had any issues with Virgin. Good customer service, free over the phone support until problems are resolved. All inclusive prices, no extra line rentals etc. Currently on over 152Mbps.
Highly recommended if your area is covered by them.
Packages work out cheaper than Sky or BT.
I'm currently with Virgin and find it decent value for money. Though generally BT would be better if your an online gamer, lower latency.
I got mine with EE as there was a discount because same as my phone...I definitely would NOT recommend them had so many problems. Would definitely rather pay more
Don't get TalkTalk, really slow and crappy customer service.

I'm with ee for fiber from cab can't say anything bad about them .. works fine had it a while only thing is call rate on land line .. but we just use the mob's it's cheaper ..

Currently with Virgin for roundabout £15 a month, comes with landline that has never and more than likely will never be used, but speed is brilliant when going through the ethernet cable, wireless pickup from the router always has seemed a bit dodgy though, still never had particuarly many problems and definitely could not live without it!
I've been with Virgin's network since they were CableTel, then NTL, and now Virgin Media.
I now pay £25 per month for 100Mb from Virgin, I don't have their phone line and I don't have TV from them.
I don't feel as if I'm paying over the odds, the service is reliable and I do get my advertised speed.
The major bonus with them is not having to have a BT phone line in order to receive the service, so on that merit alone even if my monthly tariff was higher I'd probably still be happy and consider it to be good value.
When it comes up I am going to try to get my parents to move away from BT and get IDNet internet service. I have used IDNet in the past and their service is second to none. I tried 2 other ISPs before using IDNet, I chose them all from ISP review top 10 list so I expected them to be very good but IDNet was the one which stood out when used. Well worth the extra cost and they use caps rather than traffic shaping to control bandwidth on their network. You pay for what you get, no bull****.
The reason I recommend IDNet is because they offer enterprise quality service for non-business users. You can get your home broadband to have a Service Level Agreement that guarantees any fault will be fixed within 24 hours. I don't know of any ISP that offers that at any price. For that alone I am happy to do business with them. I live on a farm so perhaps I have experienced more internet downtime than would normally be experienced by home users so reliability is at the top of my list and I'm happy to pay twice the cost of the service to ensure downtime never goes on longer than 1 day.
I agree on Virgin Media. Don't you sometimes find that sometimes you manage to top 107Mbps during office hours but from 6-9pm, you're only barely managing 100Mbps. But nonetheless, it's still a good deal and I'm happy with it.
