Setting up Homegroup help windows 10 home and windows 8

    So
I'm having trouble setting up a home group between Windows 8 machine and Windows 10 home.

The computers are on the same network and can ping each other.

They have worked before, but stopped working at some point. I (and the customer) are not sure at what point this was.

I have tried changing the services:
    Peer network grouping
    Peer networking Identity manager
    Home group listener
    home group provider
    To all "Automatic" start.

Although they were all manual start and already running as a service.

I've tried creating a new homegroup on both machines and either can "see" the homegroup, but when joining the best I get is to be able to put the password in and then a message a few minutes later saying "windows no longer detects a homegroup"

Advanced settings... (Both PC's are on a "private" network setting and have the same advanced settings to do with Network discovery, file and printer sharing)
I tried changing both PC's to "Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers" this didn't work either.

I'm wondering if an Upgrade to 8.1 might be of help on the Windows 8 machine?

I've done a fair bit of googling, but now it seems like I'm going through the same KB articles and need some further suggestions.

I suspect the Homegroup previously worked before a Windows 10 upgrade.

Windows 10 will not Homegroup with anything other than Windows 10, I had the same issue and went looking for how to fix it and that was the answer I found.

Apparently a Workgroup will work with different Windows versions, but I have never set one up and can't confirm it personally.

Workgroup works fine, I ditched homegroups as it stopped the laptop and PC's from sleeping for no good reason at random times.

not using a homegroup on mine, but I did find out that the one setting I kept forgetting was to go into the properties of the folder that you want to share, then security tab, and add the workgroup users to the security permissions. (in windows explorer)

folder now shows up on win 7, win 10, and my android tablet.

Re: Setting up Homegroup help windows 10 home and windows 8

So I was able to get their laptop Win 8 and my Win 10 Pro on my network connected. (Just 1 wireless router)
I found out they were using a wireless extender (one with an ethernet port) so it was directly connected to the router. Once they put a new cable in there directly to the router this worked.

So it was either the netgear wireless extender or the different versions of windows, or less likely the fact I did a load of upgrades on their machine.
