Well I stumbled on a part number at CPC with no picture, sod all details but a google fu revealed it should be a 12 port keystone 10" panel to mount in a rack and 12 cat 6a keystone sockets. Now I don't really need the rack part but the toolless keystone modules are £4.87 each with the 5+ discount at CPC's and the kits £17.94.

It arrived today and I have saved £40 on the cat6a modules with a free panel thrown in

    Nice!

Someone at work has pointed out you can get Chinese 10GbE PCIe cards on ebay for about £50, or £75 for a dual port. So for £150 and an old SLI/Xfire capable motherboard+cpu I can make a 10Gbit 4 port router. Starting to get interested...

Another couple of years and the price should be low enough to get that done under £100

As it stands a decent 1gb network should see me through a few more years as my server is all Sata3 WD Reds anyway.

That what I need to keep reminding myself. I didn't even think about looking at ebay, and there are some good deals there. But like you, I've got rust spinning around, mostly in the green variety. So generally I'm not going to get much more than 1gbps throughput. I do have some SSDs for VMs but I rarely transfer them down to my PC.

Interesting thought, though I am backing up to a server with 24GB of ram so I expect it can buffer quite a bit before the speed of the rust is a limit.

lol, thanks but to start with I would probably just go point to point between my server and my main workstation. I have a spare x16 graphics slot in the server, the second gigabit interface in there is on the x1 port.

Edit: Interesting thought though, the client PCs need to be able to take a x8 PCie card when they all already have a graphics card. From a quick Google, my daughter's FM2 socket uATX PC has a x16 xfire slot that is electrically x4 so that might work but be a bit slow. Wife's AM3+ machine is the same. This isn't so simple.

Some of the cable will have to run alongside mains cable

Being owner of security enterprise (cctv), I suggest you to maintain at least a 2-5 inch gap between cat(any) and main lines(if they are too thick) to avoid noise.
