    Pipex free upgrade

Had and email from Pipex about my account. Looks like I should get a free upgrade to 1Mbps, no cap, and keeping the webspace and email accounts. Could go for 2Mbps with a 5Gb cap for the same money, think doubling my current speed will do for now.

5GB cap is nothing - are you sure it's not 50GB?

Currently Pipex charge £35 a month for 1mb uncapped broadband.

In a few months thats going up to 2mb uncapped for the same price

And I would say Pipex are one of the more relieable ISPs.

Joe sixpack wont get through 5GB a day. To top it off, BT's CBC system makes it expensive for networks to keep heavy users.

I'm assuming it's the same as the Nildram packages. In which case it's 50GB a month and that's only during peak hours 8am - Midnight. Any use out of those hours does not count towards your limit.

Currently i'm paying £23.44 a month for IMbps uncapped broadband from pipex. You get 2Mbps capped at 5GB a month for the same price, and 2Mbps uncapped for just a little more.

    Bargain.

I'm gonna end up going AOL before long... (or move abroad...)

In Japan, you can get a 100mb/s connection for a few pence over 12 pence. In Norway (Or Sweden, one of those countries ) you can get 100mb/s connection upload and download with no cap for 40 quid a month.

Now, doesn't that make 3gb a month seem lame?

It's all very well and good proclaiming the benefits of other countries in regards to telecommunications and wishing we had them but sadly it's going to take a while.

Japan for instance is probably the most densely populated developed country in the world and the costs of supplying high speed connections are reduced massively by the fact that you can supply to n times more people with much less cabling and equipment than you can here in Britain.

Couple that with the fact that BT took so long to roll out these new technologies due to cost barriers we are pretty far behind. You can't really blame BT totally to be honest however - it's now a privatised company that has to have profit as a key aim which means rolling newer, faster technology for a massive loss just isn't going to happen. If BT didn't control the telecommunications system throughout the UK then we would be smoking or at least starting to but that in itself brings a whole lot more problems to the table.

    But.... 100mb/s......

2mb/s with a cap too seems stingy.

If you live in Japan, and your not Japanese, reading contents from sites external to the country will be slow. Finding servers that can transfer +10mbit/s will be difficult. Contention also is quite bad at times over there. In this country , a lot of people expect 100% service speed virtually all the time, even without an SLA.

Also as said above, supply and demand, and some countries like Korea get huge grants from the government to implement high speed broadband in the first place.
