    Half Life Server bandwidth...

Ok I want to know how much a 32 player half life server runs up bandwidth in a 30 day time period. According to my Maximum PC Magazine it says:
    Bandwidth (32 Players)
    1,280 Kbps Upstream,
    768 Kbps Downstream

Ok. So this is what I did.
    I took 1280 * 24 (hours) * 30 (days) * 32 (players) = 29491200Kbps = 28GB
    Then I do the Downstream.
    768 * 24 * 30 * 32 = 17694720Kbps = 17GB
    So 28 + 17 = 45GB
Is this correct? I am not sure because I really hope i'm doing this correctly....

That would be 1,280 Kbps (Kilobytes Per Second)....

Whether we're talking connection speed, or actual transfer rate is another matter....

But either way... It'd be something like....
    (1280 x 60 seconds x 60 minutes x 24 hours x 31 days) + (768 x 60 seconds x 60 minutes x 24 hours x 31 days)/1024 = (3428352000 + 2057011200)/1024 = 5356800 GB....

    Hmm... :|

Thats if the actual upstream is 1280kbps rather than say, 128kbps.....

I'm sure someone can correct me

Must be more than 45GB though... a 512kb ADSL user can download more than that in a month

I'd take a crazy guess at say, 1,000GB, if the servers full, 24/7.

waiiitt a second, take out that 32 player! they are showing how much it is for 32 players at 1 time.... woot so hold on
    1280 * 60(minutes) * 24 (hours) * 30 (days) = 55296000 = 53GB
    768 * 60(minutes) * 24 (hours) * 30 (days) = 33177600 = 32GB

    53+ 32 = 85GB/Month... That seems correct.

Lol... I know I was right with my figures, but only if 32 players at once use 1280kb per second of bandwidth.... which is probably about right... I dunno... but when is a server ever full 24/7? And when do all the players have fast connections? Alot may still be on dialup etc... I'd say 200GB a month would be a safe bet... but who knows!

Hmmm comes to find out they screwed up in the magazine, thats the connection that they reccomend, not the bandwidth. Ok so talking to a friend of mine who works for a game hosting buisness, she said about 2kb a sec...hold up, this is making NO SENSE!!! no way its 3GB a month for 32 player server....

    2k a second... for 32 players? Not a chance!

I'd say each user would be downloading at aroudn 30k a sec from the server for a decent game, with a decent ping and voice chat. Now, times that by 32 users, x 60 seconds, x 60 minutes, x 24 hours, x 31 days.... Thats alot of bandwidth, and thats only the upload for the server, but it is however, roughly, the absolute max.

I'm sure someone on here who runs a HL server can comment though.

Well she was just estimating with the 2k a second, depending on what goes on, your server variables, properties, and map type, it could range from 2-5k she said... hmmmm

2/5k a second of continuous streaming data. If that was the case then wudnt 56k modems be sufficient enough for a good game providing the server can send 5k/s to all of em simultaneously?

has to be more than that.

    1280/32 = 40kbps per player
    768/32 = 24kbps per player

    so 40kbps * 60secs * 60mins * 24hrs * 31days = 107136000kb = 102.18Gb (rounded up to the nearest mb)
    and 24kbps * 60secs * 60mins * 24hrs * 31days = 64281600kb = 61.31Gb (rounded up to the nearest mb)

    62Gb + 103Gb = 165Gb

Are we dealing with KBytes per second or KBits per second here, just to clear things up for me.

    This of any use?

You know wot, its late i shud be in bed. and i got work in the morning

how many people connect at 56k anyways? The highest i've gotten with dialup ever is 28k, and i live right near washington DC....surprising enough

i know i use 7kb/3kb on netgraph which would be about 720GB/month for 32 players constant for 30 days if im right. but its gonna be 5 hours tops that the servers are actually full i reckon and even themt ake into consideration peolple you can only do 3kb/3kb etc too hard to work out :>

i know someone who will know the answer to the question so i asked him we shall see when he replys

I would say take a rough average of what users are gonna connect to your server. 32 players with 2mb pipes and their rate set skyhigh will take more than 32 players with 56k modems and their rate set low.

Either way, running a 32 player server 24/7 is gonna cost you multiple £thousands per year in bandwidth.
