    Getting connection to another building.

    Hi folks,

My father in law is has an annexe in his back garden and is trying to get network connection to it. It’s a good 20-30 metres from the house. He has laid a patio and it’s not now possible to run a cable. What is going to be the best way to get a strong WiFi connection to the building, as he wants to use it as a home office. Is Mesh the answer?

Get one of these and put it near a window in the house, they are great: https://www.4gon.co.uk/ubiquiti-unif...145d59c86d32eb

Or there is an outside version: https://www.4gon.co.uk/ubiquiti-unif...145d59c86d32eb

I have the indoor version in my house and get solid wifi at the bottom of the garden 100ft away. I expect external version to be better.

If he wants wifi in the annexe he probably has power there already so why not extend using the power network - it should offer more capacity than a wifi extender

Have you seen the throughput on these Ubiquiti devices?

Re: Getting connection to another building.

    Wifi antenna and pringles can

its not a straightforward solution and mesh is not the answer.

You are attempting to transfer a signal 30m through at least 1 brick wall and possibly 2.

you have given no indication of where the BB connection is within the house, or where possible wireless access points are located, so to keep it simple lets assume that the main ingress point is at the front of the house near the street, and the annexe is to the rear of the house. This means that you have to get the signal from the front of the house to the back first of all, and preferably on the outside of the brick wall. To do this you will need to run a network cable from front to back (possibly indoors) and connect it to a wireless access point. There are directional WAP's available but generally are not cheap. This WAP would ideally be mounted on the outside wall and pointed at the annexe. failing this it could be placed inside a window and pointed at the annexe, but as we have no indication of the structure of your house and windows then I have no idea if this would be suitable.

If the annexe is on the same Ring Main as the house then powerline is an option, but 30m over powerline is going to be sketchy

I'd seriously reconsider wired connections, look to see if theres a way of disguising the cable, or laying it alongside the patio so it causes no interference.

Might be able to offer other solutions with added info tho

We're only here for the Banter - The Luvvies - Chewin' The Fat

Violence and Lubrication is the solution to fixing everything, if it still doesn't work, you need more lubrication.

I ran Ethernet cable above ground pinned to the fence, could that be an option?

Alternatively powerline extenders are pretty good now and depending on your wiring may work even if it is a different circuit. ( common N, E etc)

Homeplugs/PLA's or whatever you want to call them would be an option, failing that Ubiq stuff will do it.
