Question Recommended router for Vodafone Gigafast

    Hello,

So I have my connection with Vodafone Gigafast, 900Mb simetric. It is FTTH (the fibre cable goes to a small box inside the house and then RJ45 to the router).
I am currently using the Vodafone router that is not too bad but it is not ideal either.

In the past I have used various of the Asus routers and while they were not terrible I often have problems with the firmware.

I don't care too much about WiFi since my most sensitive things are all cabled, what I want is a router capable of exploiting those 900Mb.

Looking online it looks like all people care about nowadays is WiFi, but no real information on pure network performance.

    Any recommendations?

So, personally I would not go with a "AIO" router but rather a dedicated router and access point.

At work on our gigabit fibre lines our provider uses the EdgeRouter Lite/EdgeRouter Pro's as they support gigabit networking, have a really light weight GUI/interface and have no issues with VLANs (If you're into that sort of thing)

Just plug the modem/fiber termination RJ45 into the EdgeRouter, set to DHCP and setup your DHCP scope on your LAN and it's all good.

The only issue with this is you need a seperate switch and access point but at home I use a HP 1820-24G and UniFi AC-Lite however you could for something smaller like an 1820-8G

Did you try Merlin firmware with your Asus routers? Never had an issue either of my Asus routers running Merlin.

While the EdgeRouter Lite is very good it requires a certain amount of knowledge to set up, they are not plug & play I would say. So may not be suitable for the average user but if you have some experience then I would defintitely recommend them.

In the past I've used the EdgeRouter Lite, cheapo swtich and BT Whole Home Wi-Fi to provide wired & wi-fi internet in house, it worked very successfully.

Re: Recommended router for Vodafone Gigafast

I've a couple different Asus routers over the years, and tried Merlin with them too. I have ethernet to a couple rooms so used that to form an ethernet backhaul for the Asus AiMesh. However I got a little fed up with the hardware conking out after a while. Most recently the 5GHz channel just completely died and I was restarting one or both routers a couple times a week in the end.

I made the switch to Ubiquiti, but more specifically their more consumer variant Amplifi range. I got two Amplifi Mesh HD Routers to set up a mesh to blanket my house and it serves my 330mbit FTTH connection really well. I know people absolutely rave about the Unifi range, but I don't really need that level of hardware just yet. They have a new Wifi 6 router which looks good (Alien) that wasn't quite out yet in the UK when I purchased mine.

I agree with others that, just as I have, to avoid an all in one solution. With my BT FTTH connection, it's similar to yours. The fibre goes into a BT Openreach box which I connect to with a standard ethernet cable. I also simply got rid of the BT router in my set up, with the Amplifi routers.
