    Need help please

    Hi

I've been trying to get my father onto the internet this afternoon without any joy.

    First his setup

    Windows XP SP2

    XP2200

A new Belkin ADSL modem/router wireless

Previously he was on dial up and then on ADSL broadband (all with BT) using a USB modem. His PC is littered with remnants of these which I think might be the problem.

Ok so his Main PC is connected (wired) router (via NIC) I can access the router via IE and set his Password and User name and save that.

The router lights are all on detecting an ADSL signal and the router info says 512/256 and the NIC card shows it is receiving and sending packets of info.

Now everytime I try to get on the internet his old dial up settings box comes up with his user name and password.Obviously this can't find the internet as his old USB modem is no longer there.

I have gone into internet tools and specified both dial up the default connection and never dial up to see if either would work.

I have tried turning Zone alarm off ( he has disabled the Windows Firewall)

I have set up a new Internet connection (using internet connection wizard but it creates a WAN miniport connection rather than going through the NIC.

I am particuarly confused as whether using the NIC router modem he still has to dial up (I've got cable at home and it is just a case of plugging the router in and off it goes) So in internet tools connections do I use dial up settings or LAN settings

And how do I get the PC to search for the internet through the NIC rather than his old settings.

Thanks for any help you can offer this is driving me mad what I thought would be 5 minute job has took up nearly 3 hours!!!

Try "never dial a connection" on internet connections.... and in settings try "automatically detect settings".. Did they give you an ip for a static ip address or not?
