VoIP provider suggestions or things to avoid

Following on from thread about PTSN options.

I was looking at Vonage and the reviews seem ok-ish but I wasn't that impressed with customer service (I asked 2 simple questions to get a feel for their CS, they only answered one and ignored the follow-up query, even if "the team is available to assist you from 10 a.m. to midnight, 7 days a week. Contact us whenever and however it suits you!"..).

There are some old threads on here about them but most with few or no replies, just wondered if anyone had an up to date opinion on them or a better recommendation for a similar service. Only looking for a simple package, & I may have to just try something before I really find out what the potential hitches might be (it does seem to be a pain to port your landline number for example), but any advice gratefully received.

Thanks - I did look at that provider briefly and was a bit offput by the slightly technical and business-orientated website but I have had another good poke around and have got the gist of the home services (I think).

As far as I can tell, if I pick up a suitable SIP phone myself the only costs should be for a small setup fee, monthly cost of number of my choice ie type of number from their graded list, and then calls at ppm. One month minimum term so can try it out. Certainly seems well worth a consider so thanks for the suggestion as I might not have come back to them
