    broadband question

What are the exchange distance limits for 1mb and 2mb broadband? I seem to remember 5.5km for 512Kb, is it different for others?

Its not easy usually you have to get bt to check the cable length.

I'm only 1.75km from my exchange (in distance terms)

yet my cable length (accoring to BT engineer) is 2.3 km!!

bear in mind its a straight road from me to the exchange.

My bro in milton K is 2.25 KM from the exchange yet his cable length is nearly 7km and he can't even get RADSL!

Also remember it doesnt matter how long the line is, its the "interference" in the line that cuases the problem and is measured in decibels....

A rough guide is 1KM = 10db so the actual limit is now 60 DB or 6 KM... In theory a line 100KM line with NO loss would be able to have ADSL but then thats theory...

Things that affect it are old lines, water, the amount of joints etc etc....

actual limit is 57 db, but there is a lot of debate about it, and its not like any ****er in BT actuall knows anyway. even on the tech desk (I used to work there) they dont exactly understand the product, ask em what VPI and VCI actually ARE or maybe what Dynamic Multi tone is and I bet u they wont have a clue.

you got to take into consideration that your router/modem may had a few db to the line and get it over the limit, I know someone who had 56db on the line with nothing in the socket therefore BT was saying it's fine but when the router was connect that went to 65db and the connection was unusable...
anyway for distance and what you can or cannot get try www.bt.com/broadband which will give you a good idea of what you can get. You should be able to discuss it with your ISP though and they should be able to confirm with BT.

The limit for 512k is 6km as of last week. I'm still over though, about 2.5km from the exchange yet my line length is huge..
