Wireless signal boost

I am on Wanadoo braodband 1Mb, main PC is wired through the LAN but mine is on the wireless connection. I am getting the net with no probs as such but it is showing connection is very good but the quality as low so sometimes it can lock up or just not go at all.

Anyone got any thoughts on upping my signal strength, been looking about for some sort of booster that is software based but as of yet no luck at all, I know you can get hardware solutions but software would definately be preferable.

I've not seen any "software" boosters for wireless but I have seen a plethora of homemade antenna's designed for improving wireless signals and range.

What's the wireless kit? Some companies make dedicated wireless repeaters, and some allow their wireless access points to be used in repeater mode, but these solutions usually only work with kit of the same brand and often only a specific model. For instance, with the latest firmware, you can use one Linksys WAP54G to repeat the signal of another.
